Writing Question
Spring 2024 p. 1 U. of Introduction to Psychology Writing Assignment # 3 – Information Resources Paper The purpose of this assignment is to improve your critical thinking skills related to sources of information. Whether it be a news article, a scientific research article, or a book, you should be mindful of the information any source is providing, who is giving the information, and whether the information is trustworthy – in other words, is it likely to be accurate? As discussed in your textbook, false news is easily spread and information can be perceived as true even if it is not. ) Similarly, correct information can be misinterpreted or exaggerated, and this is more likely when communicated by individuals who (a) do not have expertise in the content being discussed or (b) the sources for information are not using rigorous standards. For this assignment, you will evaluate the credibility and validity of a source and provide a rationale supporting your answers. Evaluate the evidence for credibility and validity when creating your rationale. (See p. 2.) To complete this assignment: A. Read the source you will evaluate for the assignment: https://www.cnbc.com/2024/02/01/ifyou-answer-yes-to-these-questions-you-are-happierthan-most-says-longevity-researcher.html B. Watch this: Evaluating Sources for Credibility (youtube.com) C. Read “How do I… Evaluate sources?” below How do I… Evaluate sources? (Adapted from: http://ucblibraries.colorado.edu/how/evaluate.htm – retrieved on 9/28/15) To evaluate sources such as articles, websites, or books, you need to evaluate the credibility of the author and the validity of the information. Credibility of the Author Evaluate the author’s credentials, education, & experience using these questions: • Is the author formally educated in the subject? • Does the author work for a university or relevant research center? • Is the author a recognized scholar (writer) in the subject? • Does the author have an established history of research and writing on the subject? Validity of the Research or Information Determine the validity of the research presented in the article, website or book. Validity refers to the extent to which a concept, conclusion or measurement is well-founded and likely corresponds accurately to the real world. Determine the quality of the research used to support the argument being made. Remember that excellent or persuasive writing does not mean that the information presented is valid. Ask these questions: • Does the author thoroughly cite all sources? (Saying “a study was done” is not a citation.) • Is there a list of sources at the end of the article? • Does the author’s evidence support the claims? • Is the author’s evidence based on rigorous research, rather than a personal story? • Does the research come from peer-reviewed publications (meaning it was evaluated by experts before it was published)?
