Disability Awareness (30 points) Using a combination of activities, you are required to complete 12-hours of disability awareness activities. The activities are listed below, and a minimum of 3 activities are necessary to complete the project. After completing your experience you will write a reflection a minimum of 4 pages (double spaced) on your experiences. Take the time to summarize your perspective, beliefs and feelings about living with a disability before you begin the project. Use the questions given as a guide, but you should expand on your experience fully to receive maximum points. Research the disability types experienced during the project. Understand the conditions of the disability and identify what y would have experienced. Clearly identify the activities chosen for the project and hours spent on each activity. o Create a table with day/time specifics for each portion of the project o Proof of your experience. How can you convince me that you spent this time on the assignment? Signature at equipment checked out/in. Add pictures/video of your experience or equipment used. Links to how you accessed information. Summarize project as a whole 1. Disability awareness simulation. You will use a wheelchair or wear visual impairment glasses. You can even try to be blind. Try using a vision simulation app (ex. Viaoptasimulator app). Do a little research on your specific disability you are simulating. Whatever you choose, be safe with your choices. Possibly perform some of these tasks: o Do a sport, activity, or o Cook a meal exercise: Shopping o Go for a walk/roll o Watch/Listen to TV. Find the o Perform household duties descriptor for blindness on some movies. 2. Paralympics Coverage. Explore the web site www.paralympic.org. Watch coverage of the Paralympics. Experiences different sports both winter and summer games. Read some of the blogs of the competitors. □ Share your reaction to the information you learned on the web site and watching the coverage. □ What are some of the sports that are specific to the Paralympics? □ What are some of the disabilities you encountered through this assignment? □ Differentiate the Paralympics from other disability sport organizations (Les Autres Games, Special Olympics…) 3. Special Olympics website. Explore the site http://www.specialolympics.org. Watch some of the videos and read the blogs. Take extra care to review the section on the Spread the Word to End the Word campaign. □ Share your reaction to the information you learned on the web site and watching the coverage.
