Choose a historic site in North Carolina (state or federal site, interpretive center, exhibit, etc.) to visit (highly recommend) and relate its significance to NC history. If you cannot personally visit the site, let me know at the time of your topic approval submission. The alternative will involve an electronic visit to the site’s official website. YOUR HISTORIC SITE/OFFICIAL WEBSITE MUST BE APPROVED BY ME, and you must declare whether it will be a personal or electronic visit (which requires you to provide the official website URL with your submitted topic site). Submit your request via the proper assignment submission box in Module 4 (Due Fri. Feb. 2 at midnight). You CANNOT choose sites included in the course material, such as Fort Dobbs. You also CANNOT use cultural sites or tourist attractions (i.e., Town Creek Mound, Judiculla Rock, Oconaluftee Village, or the Biltmore House. Projects must be 3 full pages and no more than 4 pages, standard 12-point font, double-spaced analysis with standard 1” margins. Save as a Word document AND NOT AS A PDF. Add a title page (not in your page count). Your sources should include at least one primary source and four secondary sources. Project is due NO LATER than Fri. Apr. 12 at MIDNIGHT. I will accept NO late submissions(in Module 11) unless extraneous circumstances call for it.
These projects are worth 300 points, SO TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY and must include:
1) TITLE PAGE: Title of Project, Author’s Name, HIST 341-01, and Date.
2) BODY: Include short introduction, the history, and a description of the site OR its official website (I am not interested in its admission prices, hours, etc.); follow with a critical analysis of how the site OR website presents the site’s history and your conclusion of what it should add to improve its message to visitors (NO headings or sub-headings. NO direct quotes.). I am NOT interested in HOW the webpages are arranged. THINK HISTORY and HOW THE SITE/WEBSITE PRESENTS/INTERPRETS THIS TO THE YOU.
3) BE SURE to PLACE the site into its historical context.
a. Why is/was this site important in shaping North Carolina’s history (or American history).
b. Provide a short, but well-researched background history about the site using your outside sources (not the actual site OR website).
c. Next, describe how the official site OR website presents its history to the visitor. How is its interpretation to the public conducted? What categories does it take the visitor through? (I am not interested in its hours of operation or other general information.) For instance, in its public presentation does itcover any descriptions of issues relating to race, gender, class, or community from its historic period? (NOTE: All are not always applicable.) What does the site OR website want to project to the viewer? Have you provided details of the virtual tour/material or interpretation that explain what a visitor could expect to see or hear if they toured in-person OR the same website?
d. Consider if the site OR website minimizes or ignores important parts of its history that you found important in the conduct of your outside research. If so, what could it do better?
e. If you choose, you may include a PowerPoint presentation. If so, turn in only a full 3-page paper, but realize that the PP must be adequate (correct in grammar; avoid flashy presentations). The PP should accompany or add to your written paper and not merely reiterate the same information, e.g., photos, maps, graphs, or short text in bullet form.
f. A Bibliography (only for history majors/minors) OR Works Cited (MLA) page IS REQUIRED (not part of the paper’s page count): You must use at least one primary source and four secondary sources. Wikipedia or other such online sources are not acceptable; use only academic journal articles, ebooks, or books. Do not depend on tourist websites.
If you are not a history major/minor, within the text of your paper,you MUST include parenthetical references to cite your source(s) and a Works Cited page (MLA). If you are a history major/minor, you MUST use Turabian, or Chicago Manual of Style, for the footnote citations and Bibliography.
IN-TEXT CITATIONS ARE REQUIRED. If you are not sure how to do either, there are web-sources, such as https://owl.english.purdue.edu/ (https://owl.english.purdue.edu/), Purdue University’s OWL site. Do not wait until a week before this is due or you will have trouble.
