Instead, we continue to experience a dynamic business environment (exacerbated by this also happening in life) and need to work quickly and swiftly. Oftentimes, this happens for the individual work but it also happens in the team side of work. Now that you have looked at the basics of teams, how to build an effective team, and what to consider for the team to sustain momentum toward the goal, we will look at a more modern look at teams.

Response 1: The first aspect that made all this work was decision-making and problem-solving. There were many decisions to be made by the 33 men trapped and those working tirelessly above ground to ensure their safety. Above ground, rational decision-making was being practiced. As something like this had not happened before, evidence-based decision-making could not be used. President Piñera worked with NASA, Maptek, and many other volunteers to ensure the safety and release of all 33 men (Rashid et al., 2014). The off-site team, which vetted all the ideas, had to make their own decisions about the feasibility of each suggested concept. Sougarret did not let his ego get in the way, and with individuals coming in to help, he avoided imposing excessive hierarchy (Rashid et al., 2014). Communication was also influential in many ways. Sougarret instituted daily communications with families (Rashid et al., 2014). The technical subgroup leaders met every morning to handle the transition from day and night shifts (Rashid et al., 2014). After day 17, the hole drilled down to the miners became the way to communicate and update the 33 men.
Something I can take away is emulating Sougarret, not letting ego get in the way, and keeping composure under pressure. Sougarret did not know the outcome, but he remained calm and worked closely with all those involved to find a solution that would save the lives of the 33 miners.
Response 2: The Chilean mine rescue in 2010 involved the successful extraction of 33 miners trapped underground for 69 days in the San José copper-gold mine in Chile. The Chilean mine rescue is a powerful example of effective crisis leadership, highlighting the importance of communication, collaboration, adaptability, and continuous learning. These leadership lessons are applicable across various contexts and can help leaders facing challenging circumstances to navigate them. The two aspects that I learned that were effective during this rescue were:
Dual Approach: leaders must perform three essential tasks: Envision, Enroll, and Engage.
Envision: Leaders must articulate a vision aligning with the organization’s mission and goals. This involves defining a clear direction for the team or organization, outlining objectives, and communicating a shared purpose.
Enroll: Once the vision is established, leaders must enroll followers in pursuing that vision. This involves gaining buy-in and commitment from team members by effectively communicating the benefits and relevance of the vision to their roles and aspirations.
Engage: Finally, leaders must actively engage with their teams to empower them to contribute to realizing the vision. This involves fostering a culture of collaboration, trust, and accountability, where team members feel valued, supported, and encouraged to innovate and take ownership of their work.
Leaders used contradictory approaches: Control and Empower.
The mission leaders in the Chilean mine rescue employed a dual approach that combined elements of control and empowerment to manage the crisis effectively.
Control: The leaders exercised control by implementing strict safety protocols, establishing clear lines of communication, and coordinating the rescue efforts with precision.
Empowerment: At the same time, the leaders empowered individuals within the rescue team by entrusting them with responsibilities and fostering collaboration.
By balancing control and empowerment, the mission leaders ensured that the rescue operation remained well-coordinated and disciplined. Overall, the dual approach and exhibiting both control and empowerment were instrumental in overcoming the complex challenges of the crisis and achieving a successful outcome.
