A number of environmental factors are responsible for the difficulties that arise when attempting to maintain a healthy body weight and body image. The pervasive impact of the media and advertising, which frequently promotes unattainable standards of beauty and thinness, is one of the key factors. When someone is constantly exposed to these images, it can cause them to feel dissatisfied with their body and prompt them to engage in unhealthy behaviors related to weight management, such as excessive exercise or extreme diets. In addition, socio-economic variables play a role, as there may be a lack of chances for physical activity and availability to foods that are high in nutrients in particular populations. The dynamics of the family and the impacts of peers also play a role in shaping attitudes regarding body image and health behaviors. When parents or peers send negative messages or engage in actions that are harmful to the body, the likelihood of acquiring unhealthy habits is increased. Children who are not yet in their prepubescent years are not completely immune to the impacts of a society that is image-focused. Despite the fact that they may not yet be as sensitive as older adolescents, they are nonetheless subjected to messages in the media and societal conventions that encourage particular body standards. Additionally, children are increasingly exposed to social media and digital platforms at younger ages, which might expose them to unattainable beauty standards and peer pressure connected to appearance. This can have a negative impact on their development.
When a person reaches pre-pubescence, they experience an increase in their level of autonomy, which can either promote or hinder the formation of healthy behaviors. On the one hand, children are able to exercise greater control over their preferences for food and physical activity, which can provide them the ability to make decisions that are more beneficial to their health. On the other hand, if it is not appropriately guided, this newly discovered independence can also result in behaviors that are not healthy. It is possible that youngsters are more sensitive to the affects of their peers, such as poor eating habits or sedentary activities, if they do not receive the appropriate instruction and guidance. Consequently, it is of the utmost importance for parents and teachers to offer support and direction at this stage of development, with the goal of encouraging autonomy within the context of healthy habits and self-care. In order to nurture optimal physical and mental health during pre-pubescence, it is vital to implement methods such as encouraging open communication, modeling good habits, providing access to nutritional foods, and offering chances for physical activity.

Bullying, I first learned about that term as an adult here in the United States. I was born and raised in Cuba, and when I was a child or a teenager, I just called the people who offended me or made fun of me “annoying.” I believe that in one way or another, we all make fun of others, say something that hurts them emotionally, and we’ve also been on the receiving end and been the victims ourselves. Personally, I experienced it most during adolescence. My mom didn’t let me shave my legs, and some classmates spent their time teasing me about my hairy legs. I wore long socks to cover them up and hid so they wouldn’t see me. It made me feel insecure, with low self-esteem.
Today, looking back, I don’t really see my classmates as being so bad for telling me that my legs were too hairy; it was true. The problem was with me, as I didn’t know how to shut them up. At that age, I didn’t understand that hairy legs didn’t define who I was, and I never knew how to show them that I didn’t care what they thought of me. Of course, I did care because at 13, I didn’t have much emotional intelligence, and I didn’t tell my mom how bad that situation made me feel.
Now, at 37, with children and having worked in a classroom for 10 years, I realize that we’ve been tackling bullying incorrectly. We criticize it, say it’s bad, that it does a lot of harm, and in some cases, irreparable harm. In my opinion, we should give our children and students resources to develop healthy self-esteem, to have confidence in themselves, to know how to speak up when something bothers them, and not to give in to wrongdoing. Children and young people need to feel stronger, and I’m not talking about physical strength but mental strength, in their ideals. I believe that’s the best way to combat bullying.
By empowering our youth with the tools to navigate their emotions and develop resilience, we can create a culture of empathy and respect where bullying has no place. It starts with fostering open communication, building self-confidence, and teaching empathy and kindness. As parents, educators, and mentors, we have the power to shape a generation that values inclusivity, compassion, and understanding.
