When I initially read this question, I will admit I thought of the two terms being the same and using it interchangeably in my previous discussions. However, rereading the question and taking a second look at it, there is a difference between the two terms. The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai [I.S.M.M.S.] (n.d.) has explain both terms that makes it easier to understand. Evidence-based practice begins with asking the question, “how does the current policy and procedures reflect the latest research?” The goal of evidence-based practices is to find the latest developments and implement them into current practice to help improve the patient’s outcome. Research can also ask a question: “is the latest policy or protocol giving us the results we want? The goal of research is to develop or test the method (I.S.M.M.S., n.d.).
One article that discusses a need for change is a systemic review of the use of indwelling catheters, the rates of infections and what barriers exist (Atkins et al., 2020). After reviewing the data, the writers advocated for a change in the attitudes nurses have towards catheters, including the usage, catheter care and prolonged usage of the device. Atkins et al. (2020) mentioned many nurses do not believe the complications of using the catheters and so reeducation and a change in the system is needed.
