Overview
Here are descriptions of four athletes:
Athlete 1: Tracy is an elite sprinter preparing for the next Olympics. She is very close to the U.S. record and would like to break it at the Olympic trials in 3 months. She is nervous because it is her first time competing at the trials. She keeps thinking about her opponents and what their level of training has been.
Athlete 2: Aaron is a red-shirt sophomore quarterback at a high-level Division I school (i.e., he had one year of practice as a freshman, but did not play in games). His coaches were impressed by his progress last year and expect him to get significant playing time this year. Aaron is confident in his abilities, but maybe too confident. His attitude in practice has recently changed; he has become more complacent and lazier during training sessions.
Athlete 3: Lauren is a talented high school soccer player with a lot of potential. She loves to play but does not enjoy practice. She has aspirations of playing college soccer when she graduates. Her coach and teammates are worried about her work ethic in practice, but Lauren is unaware of her behavior. This plan should focus on helping Lauren improve her motivation.
Athlete 4: Ben is an amateur cyclist wanting to turn pro. Ben recently suffered a back injury. He does not want to fall behind in his training but needs several weeks of physical therapy before returning to competition. Ben is experiencing some anxiety about getting backon the bike because of the memory of his injury. This plan should focus on helping Ben remain on track and reduce his anxiety about returning to cycling.
Rules of Engagement
Pick one of the four athletes described above and go through the process of developing a mental performance plan with the athlete. What would you discuss? This plan should address the following aspects:
- How the athlete should handle emotional “peaks and valleys”?
- How the athlete should monitor/manage their arousal level through practice/competition?
- Their goals of the practice/competition.
- Their emotional recovery plan.
How they will handle problems or obstacles, etc.
Triggers, releases, and cue words should be utilized, along with other mental training techniques.
- Please provide specific in-game examples (e.g, how an athlete plans to react to a bad call or how they would handle an end of the game situation).
Provide a thoughtful response to one other person’s post. For example, ask them a question about their post, or provide insight on a question they posed in the post.
- The instructor will respond to any questions posted on this discussion board within 48 hours of the post.
- The instructor will clarify, if needed. Please be courteous and professional when providing input.
- Reflection is an important part of the learning process. Your task is to keep a course journal in which you’ll write a short paragraph summarizing what each content area means to you and how you can use the knowledge to guide your future professional practice as a coach.
- For example, consider the following questions in your reflection:
- What were the most important and/or interesting things you learned?
What were the most confusing or difficult ideas or tasks?
- How could you incorporate this knowledge into professional practice?
