Yunior or Beto from Junot Diaz’s “Drown”
Seymour Glass or Muriel from JD Salinger’s “A Perfect Day for Bananafish”
Eveline from “Eveline” by James Joyce
The Unnamed Narrative from Sherman Alexie’s “The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven”
Pai from Whale Rider
Mrs. Ruby Turpin from “Revelation” by Flannery O’Connor
Option #1
Write a letter that takes on the voice, or persona, of one of the characters listed above (even if they are dead by the end of the story). The letter should be written to a friend/confidant that the character trusts entirely, either one from the story, or someone imagined. In other words, the letter should be an honest and truthful reflection of the character chosen, one where the character feels at ease to talk about him or her self. Overall, the letter should aim to characterize the the individual about whom you are writing. It should also use specific details, context, and integrate at least three excerpts from the story chosen—in MLA format. In effect, the letter is a character analysis.
The letter should also incorporate some aspect of one of the story’s themes — “a universal idea conveyed through a work of literature” — as part of the overall analysis. In other words, the letter should discuss how theme and character relate. For example, how “obsession” is so detrimental to Nikki’s character in “It Would Be Different If.” Or how homophobia can be such a destructive force for a young man, like Yunior, who holds such self-limiting views of masculinity.
The objective of the letter is to honestly discuss what the character “wants”—in other words, his or her motivation in the story and provide detailed support for this. It should also take into consideration the conflict—both internal and/or external—that informs the character’s actions, thoughts, decisions, etc. Other important aspects of these characters’ particular story such as setting or symbolism, can also be taken into consideration. Examples: The narrator being an algebra teacher in “Sonny’s Blues”; or how Seymour Glass lies on the beach with his bathrobe on. The letter should also be factual to the story itself. It is not your job to make up details or rewrite the story.
Most importantly, the letter should sound natural and as if it were written by the character him or herself; therefore, it is recommended that the letter not overtly use the literary terms, per se, but instead discuss things like setting, conflict, motivation, in a way that is “natural” to the character. For example, in terms of discussing setting (without using the term setting), Nikki from “It Would Be Different If” might say something like: “Our little town was a dead-end, much like my life had become.”
Also note: Even though you are writing a letter, you need to still consider this as a well-organized, structured, and paragraphed essay. Letters should still have a thesis statement and take care to be written clearly and concisely with strong details and context from the story your character inhabits.
