For this assignment, you will have the opportunity to develop a professional memo to share with community leaders describing your research findings on your community issue. A professional memo can be a very effective way to articulate information to individuals or groups of people to bring about awareness and understanding of a situation. This awareness can play an important role in creating buy-in and support within your community. What you learn from this exercise will be valuable to your Final Project (Activity 7.1: Final Project Assignment) when you present your solution to those thought leaders on your community issue.
Activity Instructions
To begin this assignment, carefully review the Memos: Audience and Purpose and Memos: Sample Memo resources to develop your understanding of how to write a properly formatted memo. An important note here is your memo should be 1-2 pages maximum and brevity will be essential to ensure you are articulating your message clearly, concisely, and in a professional manner. Then, please discuss the following sections in your memo.
- Describe your chosen community issue to your selected community leader by providing a synopsis of the current situation using research findings to support your context.
- Explain why the key findings you have identified will be integral in taking action on a solution to your community issue.
- Conclude the memo with a discussion persuading your stakeholder to take action by citing one or two key references to research that drive the point home.
At the end of your submission, include a brief Design Statement explaining the process and tools you used to develop your work. Your statement should be about a paragraph or so, in your own words (rather than formally written), and unique to this assignment.
