- Amanda: I would define social inequality as certain groups of people receiving more benefits, opportunities or preferential treatment over another. I think we see a lot of social inequality regarding wealth in many areas. More often than not, the wealthy receive better treatment and opportunities. In school, the children from affluent families would see more play time in sports or special treatment when it came to the rules. When shopping, if you look “poor”, you’re watched more closely or perhaps even followed. I think many times this behavior is so subtle it is often overlooked.

Marquitta: Social inequality is the unfair and unequal treatment or distribution of resources and opportunities from one social group versus another social group. This is manifested by the benefit or reward that is apparent within social categories and positions. According to Mair, Wolf, and Seelos, (2016),” Sociologists consider inequality to be an organizing feature of societies that manifests in unequal access to opportunities and rewards for different social positions or statuses within a group or society, and it is rooted in socially constructed categories (such as gender, caste, or class) that determine boundaries for inclusion and exclusion and demarcate positions of power and privilege.” Social inequality defined in this manner allows for the inclusion of how disparities are observed across a vast of categories and privileged positions. Inequality can be viewed simplistically as resources afforded to one group and not another based on an identifying factor.
The unequal distribution of power within impoverished marginalized communities demonstrates how communities within cities lack resources, opportunities, community revitalization, and economic structure. The disparities of benefits result in higher crime rates, and increased policing, resulting in impoverished communities experiencing higher rates of recidivism. Addressing inequality within impoverished communities is critical to the vitality of cities while contributing to opportunity building economically which results in education, lowering crimes, and education.
