Disc one The article that I chose to analyze was Colasante et al.’s article titled “Any Time and Place? Digital emotional support for digital natives.” I chose this article because I think that it is the most applicable to my age group. Digital natives is a term that describes those who have grown up surrounded by the internet and technology which describes our entire generation. In this study, researchers studied the effectiveness of digital emotional support. This can mean support sent over text messages or something like a Zoom call. Essentially just emotional support given over a digital medium. They chose to study this as much research has been done on the effectiveness of in-person emotional support however very little of it has focused on emotional support over a digital medium. In their study, they found that, for digital natives, digital support is just as effective as inperson emotional support meaning that support given over digital media is as effective as emotional support that would be given through something like an in-person therapist. This has interesting implications and is an important finding in our post-COVID world. During COVID and since many people have relied on support over digital media such as a Zoom call the introduction of this type of support will be important in the future. Disc 2 ; I read Zhang’s (2017) article titled “The Stress-Buffering Effect of Self-Disclosure on Facebook: An Examination of Stressful Life Events, Social Support, and Mental Health Among College Students.” I chose this article because, based on the title, it seemed to be relevant to my personal life as it studied college students self-disclosing on social networking sites (SNSs). The researchers conducted a cross-sectional study of college students at a university in Hong Kong. They looked at whether self-disclosure (SD) on Facebook was related to depression and life satisfaction. They introduced factors of SD that included amount, depth/ intimacy, honesty, and intent and looked at whether any of these factors moderated a potential relationship between SD on SNSs and mental well-being. The researchers also looked at the relationship between SD and perceived/ enacted social support on Facebook. Perceived social support (PSS) differs from enacted social support (ESS) in that ESS constitutes observable behaviors of support on SNSs. Zhang also looked at life stressors and how they might mediate the relationship between mental well-being and SD on SNSs. The researchers studied this because the incidence of depression among teens and young adults in Hong Kong is very high (reports of up to ~42%), and many college students rely on social networks to vent and get social support. The results of the study showed that SD on Facebook significantly moderated the relationship between life stressors and depression. Amount, level of intimacy, and intent were all positively correlated with life satisfaction, and honesty was negatively correlated with life satisfaction. Further, disclosure intimacy, honesty, and intent were positively related to ESS, and ESS positively related to PSS, naturally. However, they found no significant relationship between enacted social support and depression. Zhang’s findings showed that self-disclosure on Facebook acted as a sort of catharsis for students and moderated the relationship between stress and depression. Venting online was shown to positively affect life satisfaction and perceived social support. However, if SD was very honest, PSS decreased, indicating that strategic disclosure is better than complete honest disclosure when it comes to mental well-being and life satisfaction.
