Social Work Question
Over the last few weeks we have explored grassroots visions of sustainable agriculture, the intersections of education and well-being, and nutrition and nutritionism. This book review is a synthetic assignment that is intended to provide you a space to reflect on what you have each learned surrounding these concepts.
The first step in this assignment is to pick a book that thematically addresses either 1) education and sustainable development; 2) agroecology and sustainable agriculture; 3) nutrition and nutritionism.
A list of books is organized thematically below. I’m ok with you choosing different books than this list, but they must first be cleared by me, so please send in a Canvas message the title of your book, and a brief description of why you think it would be a good substitution for this assignment.
You do not need to buy one of these books; the University’s Interlibrary Loan System (ILL) will be able to acquire you a loaned copy. It is imperative that you put in a request for your book as soon as possible so as to ensure you have time to get a copy, read, and engage with it for this assignment. You can put in an ILL request at this link.

Book Review Guidelines
Each book review essay will be 3 pages. The first page should be an introduction, which offers a broad synthesis of how the topical area you are focusing on (i.e. education) contribute to well-being. You may draw on our class readings and lecture to inform your analysis for this section. Next, provide a one page review of your book. Thematically-organized questions to address in the book review are listed below. Last, your review will contain a one page conclusion that synthesizes the main points from your review.
Below are a set of thematically organized questions to address in the one page review.
Topic 1: Education and Sustainable Development— Critically explore the concept of “education for sustainable development.” Begin by discussing how “education” and “sustainable development” are traditionally conceived to be causally related. How do the authors engage with these concepts? What case studies or data to they draw upon to either support or critique these concepts. How are education and sustainable development portrayed as connected to wellbeing?
Topic 2: Agroecology and Sustainable Agriculture– How is agroecology defined and discussed in this book? What are some of the central facets of agroecology? What case studies or data do the authors draw upon to explore these concepts. Drawing upon our lectures and course readings, how is agroecology connected with wellbeing?
Topic 3: Nutrition and nutritionism–What is nutritionism and how does it relate to nutrition? What case studies or data do the authors draw upon to exlore these concepts. How does nutritionism provide a critical set of lenses to analyze the linkages between nutrition, wellbeing, and development. In what ways does a nutritionistic perspective create the conditions for development interventions? What might a critical approach to nutrition look like?
Do not rely entirely upon quotes from the book as your only examples. The objective is to synthesize the arguments made in the book with readings and lecture content, and be able to express those arguments in your own words as answers to the various questions.
You will need to cite the individual authors.
Your in-text citations should have this format for a general citation (Name Year). For example, (Brosius 1999). If quoting, the format is (Name Year: Page number), i.e (Brosius 1999: 24)
Your bibliography should have this format:
To cite a journal article
Last name, First name. “Title.” Journal Title Volume. Issue (Year): Pages.
EXAMPLE: Altieri, Miguel A. 2009. Agroecology, small farms, and food sovereignty. Monthly Review 61: 102-113.
To cite a book:
