PSY/SOC 200 Final Assessment Outline Competency Name: Social Psychology Competency Statement: Social Psychology marks the intersection between the individual and the social setting. It is in this intersection that many people live their lives. The purpose of this course is to study the influence the social setting has upon the individual and the individual upon the social setting, as well as look at attitudes, behaviors & beliefs of individuals. This course will look at the foundations, concepts, theories and practices of social psychology and apply these concepts in specific settings such as crime, education, media, health and other areas of common concern. Final Assessment Title: Applying Social Psychology to American History X (content warning: violence and racism) Competency Learning Outcomes (CLOs) 1. Identify the impact of both Sociology and Psychology on the development of Social Psychology and connect research practices, theories of affect and behavior from both disciplines to the practice of Social Psychology 2. Recognize and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of theories of social learning and cognitive development. 3. Project the impact of social affect and the development of the self on both individuals and groups 4. Identify individual and group attitudes and behaviors as sources of patterns of persuasion and conformity. 5. Recognize human biases and employ emotional intelligence in the analysis of stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination. Purpose of the Assessment This assessment will demonstrate the student can practice and apply important social psychological concepts by using them to explain various parts of the film American History X (content warning: violence and racism) Submission Artifacts: One 2500 word paper applying concepts from each LO/module to a different scenes/storylines/characters from the film American History X (content warning: violence and racism) INSTRUCTIONS: Watch the film American History X (content warning: violence and racism) and choose at least one concept covered in each Learning Outcome/Competency Module to apply to a scene/character/storyline. You must use a different scene/storyline/character for each application (although there may be overlap). For example – from LO5 you may want to apply the concept of Stereotypes to a scene and then from LO 2 you may want to apply a Learning Theory to a character (who was also in the scene used for LO5). APPLYING means – how does the concept explain what you are seeing in that scene/character/storyline. Each application should be 500 words long and be specifically grounded with references to course content. HELPFUL HINTS: – Watch the film before you start your competency so you will be thinking about it as you learn different concepts – Focus on Key Takeaway files in each LO to brainstorm ideas for concepts to apply – The film provides (fictional) examples of all of the Social Psychology concepts covered in the course – Think of the exercise as “putting on your social psychologist hat” and explaining what you see in the film. – This is NOT A RESEARCH PAPER, you should only be using references from COURSE CONTENT (readings, lectures, videos) Check Before Submission: Before submitting, double-check, have you have met the criteria noted below.
