- This semester has been a very challenging one—I encountered a lot of new things. Firstly, two subjects are included in this semester, which are FNP591 and FNP592. Another considerable thing is having to do a clinical. During clinical, knowing the preceptor is a nerve-wracking experience. It is a very intimidating moment because I do not know what to expect since I have no previous knowledge of clinical experience as a Family Nurse Practitioner student. The good thing is that my preceptor knows how to handle students, particularly newbies like me. Although I have worked as a registered nurse for several years, being an FNP student is a new experience. Thankfully, my preceptor is patient in guiding me and sharing his knowledge throughout the semester. Clinical practicum is crucial to the education of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN). According to Todd et al. (2019), preceptors play a vital role in enhancing students’ clinical skills and examination abilities and laying the foundation for how APRNs can effectively participate in interdisciplinary teams in their future clinical practices. Due to the rising demand for clinical training opportunities and the increasing clinical productivity demands on active clinicians, nursing schools need to adopt a new approach to clinical education and find ways to attract and incentivize high-quality preceptors. This is consistent with National Graduate Nurse Education (GNE) findings, which highlight the benefits of academic-clinical collaborations in ensuring quality clinical practicums(Todd et al., 2019).
Reflecting on my experiences this semester, I realized the importance of listening to patient concerns. If there is anything I would improve or change, it would be to improve my listening skills. Tennant et al. (2023) suggested that active listening is a crucial aspect of professional communication, and to master it, one must practice it intentionally. Communication involves exchanging information between two parties, the sender and the receiver, through different means, such as verbal, written, or nonverbal. In active listening, the receiver must confirm that they have received the information and provide feedback to the sender to ensure mutual understanding. Effective communication is not innate but a learned skill that requires continuous practice and improvement. It is a vital skill that forms the foundation of teamwork and fosters strong relationships with patients, which is crucial for positive healthcare outcomes. Effective communication also enhances the problem-solving efficiency of teams and significantly reduces the chances of errors(Tennant et al., 2023).
Six SOAP notes were approved this semester. I have done four adult and two geriatric cases with different body system categories. Seven adults, six pediatrics, six geriatrics, and two other cases are required to complete the program; hence, 21 cases. Therefore, I need to focus more on acquiring six pediatric cases, four geriatric cases, three adult cases, and two other preferred cases to complete the required SOAP notes. I can focus more on making SOAP notes on wellness and the rest of the body systems. In addition, Podder et al. (2023) define SOAP notes as a commonly used approach to healthcare documentation. This acronym, which stands for Subjective, Objective, Assessment, and Plan, enables healthcare professionals to record patient information in a structured and systematic manner. It also provides a cognitive framework for clinical reasoning. The SOAP note is vital for evaluating, diagnosing, and treating patients based on the data they provide. It also serves as a communication tool for healthcare professionals and a checklist for gaining insights from patient records(Podder et al., 2023).
