Communications Question
INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION RESEARCH PAPER #2
Choose one of the following two options to complete. For either option chosen, your research paper must be 4-6 pages in length. APA style is required. Make note that your cover page and References do NOT count toward the page total. You do not need to submit an abstract. You must cite the main text in our course by Ting-Toomey and Chung. You must creatively and clearly provide a minimum of two separate sources that connect with something discussed in your paper. You are welcome to cite more than this, including your course texts, but these do not count as the two separate sources. Your research paper should be submitted on the due date shown in Canvas as well as in Canvas as an MS Word doc/docx.
OPTION A: Intercultural (IC) Single Film Analysis
This assignment asks you to apply three key concepts from Chapter 8 (on outgroup biases), Chapter 9 (on managing intercultural conflict), or Chapter 10 (on IC-intimate relationships). For example, from Chapter 8, you might select concepts such as ethnocentrism, stereotypes, and prejudice; or from Chapter 9, you might select concepts such as IC conflict goals, conflict styles, and conflict facework; or from Chapter 10, you might select concepts such as individualism-collectivism relationship expectations, IC-intimate conflict obstacles, and relationship conflict resolutions.
Select a feature-length film that reflects some of the above concepts. Watch the film, take note of the communication exchange that occurs between the characters in the film, reflect about the overall meaning of the film, and then select two key episodes from the film that have a strong impact on your viewing experience. Use these two scenes in your analytical movie review assignment. Ideally, the two scenes you pick should have some fascinating parallels or contrasts. [Film possibilities: Crash, Biutiful, Avatar, In a Better World, etc. (*Or select your own ICC movie—try to pick a recent ICC film from the contemporary film list.) An extensive list of possible films has been attached to this assignment for your convenient consideration. If you do NOT choose a film from the list provided, you are encouraged to share and confirm that your selection is acceptable with your professor.]
To assist your focus in writing an organized paper, be sure to accomplish the following:
Movie synopsis: Provide a brief summary or main plot line and the key characters of the movie.
Scene 1 + analytical concepts: Explain why you have selected this particular scene for analysis; provide a brief summary of the scene. Introduce and define the three major concepts you will be using to analyze this scene (and indicate what chapter they are from). Use these three concepts to analyze the scene with explanatory depth. Feel free to use specific dialog, nonverbal gestures, and examples from the scene.
Scene 2 + analytical concepts: Explain why you have selected this particular scene for analysis; provide a brief summary of the scene. Use three ICC concepts (they can be the same concepts from the Scene 1 analysis) to analyze the episode with explanatory depth and interpretation insights. Feel free to use specific dialog, nonverbal gestures, and examples from the scene.
Intercultural/interethnic communication IMPLICATIONS: Please note any meaningful differences and similarities between the two scenes in relationship to your analytical concepts and present your interpretive findings in a systematic manner. IN CONCLUSION: What are your overall evaluations of the film? Favorable? Or unfavorable? Would you recommend the film to others who want to learn about ICC obstacles, challenges, and/or vibrant richness? If you were the director of the film, would you approach the film (or the ending) differently? Would you create an ICC movie sequel? Conclude and stretch your creativity and imagination.
REFERENCES: Full citation of the film chosen, full cites from the UIC textbook, and full citations of a minimum of two additional sources.
Grading criteria will include, but is not limited to having a well-organized paper format / breadth and depth of interpretations + rich examples used / tight connection between ICC concepts, explanation, and analysis / inspiring ideas, originality, and new insights gained/persuasive and cogent writing style.
OPTION B: Lost in Translation – Intercultural Cinema Comparison
This assignment asks you to apply three key concepts from any chapter in the Interplay textbook. For example, from Chapter 1, you might select concepts such as the importance of studying intercultural communication, flexibility, and the staircase model; or from Chapter 7, you might select concepts such as intercultural nonverbal gestures, haptics, and time orientation; or from Chapter 10, you might select concepts such as individualism-collectivism relationship expectations, intercultural-intimate conflict obstacles, and relationship conflict resolutions.
Select a feature-length film released in one country and remade in another. For example:
La Femme Nikita (France)…………………………..Point of No Return (USA)
- Children of Heaven (Iran)……………………………Homerun (Singapore)
- Eat Drink Man Woman (Taiwan)…………………..Tortilla Soup (USA)
- Il Mare (South Korea)……………………………….The Lake House (USA)
- Infernal Affairs I, II, III (Hong Kong)……………….The Departed (USA)
- My Sassy Girl (South Korea)…………………………My Sassy Girl (USA)
Abre Los Ojos (Spain)……………………………………………..Vanilla Sky (USA)
Let the Right One In…………………………………..Let Me In (USA)
[You are welcome to choose your own film(s) for analysis, but you may wish to consult with your professor prior to making your final decision.]
Watch the films, taking careful note of comparing each film on the communication exchange, nonverbal communication, translation of plot, overall meaning of the film, and your reaction to all your viewing. Select the same three key episodes from each film you feel are relevant to compare. Use these three episodes in your analytical movie review assignment. Ideally, the episodes you pick should have some fascinating parallels or contrasts.
To assist your focus in writing an organized paper, be sure to accomplish the following:
Movie synopsis: Introduce the movie and provide a rationale for choosing your film. Share which one was released first. Provide a brief summary or the main plot line and the key characters of the movie.
Scene 1 + analytical concept(s): Explain why you have selected this particular scene for analysis; provide a brief summary of the scene. Introduce and define the main concept you will be using to analyze this scene (and indicate what chapter it is from). Use the concept to analyze the scene with explanatory depth by comparing how both scenes worked . . . or did not work. What was lost in translation? Feel free to use specific dialog, nonverbal gestures, and examples from the scene.
Scene 2 + analytical concept(s): Explain why you have selected this particular scene for analysis; provide a brief summary of the scene.
Scene 3 + analytical concept(s): Explain why you have selected this particular scene for analysis; provide a brief summary of the scene.
Intercultural / interethnic communication IMPLICATIONS: Please note any meaningful differences and similarities between the two films in relationship to your analytical concepts and present your interpretive findings in a systematic manner. CONCLUSION: What are your overall evaluations of each film? Favorable? Or unfavorable? What did you learn about language, context, and ICC challenges? What would you change in the remake? Would you create an ICC movie sequel? Conclude and stretch your creativity and imagination.
