Indiana Wesleyan University addressing the situation of high job satisfaction while employee turnover is poor,
Background Information
There is an extremely long list of data collection procedures available. Here are just a few:
Surveys
Questionnaires
- Interviews
- Focus groups
- Direct observation
- Automated tracking
- Document and record studies
- Experiments
- Polls
- Barometric analysis
- As you can see from this list, there are well-known methods, like surveys, but also quite a few others that are more obscure, like barometric analysis.
- All the methods, of course, have tradeoffs. For example, surveys are very efficient – It is easy to quickly collect a large amount of data from many subjects. However, the resulting data tends to be very shallow. It is difficult to get deep, meaningful insights with a survey. In contrast, interviews are a great way to uncover hidden meaning and to get a deep understanding of a subject. However, they are very time-consuming and expensive. There are good reasons why qualitative studies tend to be much longer than quantitative studies!
For this assignment, we are going to revisit our example scenario from Discussion 5.2, which is given again below for quick reference.
Example Scenario
Imagine you are a student in a well-respected DBA program. To meet your graduation requirements, you need to demonstrate your research acumen by completing a research project with a partner organization.
The partner organization you have selected has a serious retention problem. Even though the company has a strong reputation and pays its employees well above market rates, turnover has been a consistent issue. Despite several major recruiting drives, the company has been unable to back-fill lost employees quickly enough to meet its customers’ demands. This is starting to lead to frustrated customers and lost business.
Your partner organization has asked you to identify the root cause of their retention problem and to recommend a solution. The company is large and complex, with well over 20,000 employees spread throughout the globe. They have provided you with access to all their internal data on this issue, including their HR database with demographic information, training records, employee performance reviews, and the detailed results of the past several years’ worth of employee satisfaction surveys.
Instructions
Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.
Read:
Chapter 6 of Kuhn (1970): The Structure of Scientific Revolutions
Chapters 9 and 10 of Arbnor and Bjerke (2009): Methodology for Creating Business Knowledge
Imagine that during your review of the secondary data your partner organization in the above scenario provided you, you discover that the job satisfaction of the employees is actually rather high. This has left you with some obvious questions, like:
How is it that employee turnover is poor, but job satisfaction is high?
Is the job satisfaction data wrong for some reason?
What other factors, other than job satisfaction, could be contributing to the high turnover?
- By Day 5 of the workshop, prepare and submit an initial discussion posting responding to the following questions:
- Considering the information given above, what data collection technique would you suggest in order to get more insight into the situation?
Why did you choose this data collection method? Explain and justify your choice.
- What tradeoffs do you expect with this data collection method? What’s the downside?
Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Robustly support your arguments and appropriately cite any sources you use. Include a reference list.
- By the end of the workshop, you will evaluate two of your classmates’ proposed data collection techniques, by:
Evaluating the tradeoffs inherent with the approach chosen by your classmate.
- Suggesting an alternative data collection method that may be more effective for the given situation.
Explain the advantages of your suggested alternative over your classmate’s proposal.
