Timeline of the Barnes Family This timeline follows the events in the lives of the Barnes family. Camila is the mother in this family, and David is the father. They adopted a daughter, Samantha, and also have a son named Jimmy. January 1994: Samantha is born Event description: Samantha is born into her biological family, with a single mother. March 1994: Samantha is placed in child welfare Event description: Samantha is pulled from her home. She was found abandoned in her crib, and wasn’t being fed or held regularly. May 1996: Samantha is returned to her biological mother September 1998: Samantha is placed in child welfare again Event description: When Samantha is returned to her home, there is lots of violence, hitting, kicking, and not being fed well. Samantha experiences a lot of trauma, so she is once again removed from her home. July 1999: Samantha is adopted Event description: Samantha is adopted by Camila and David, and the family settles into their home in Hopkins Village. September 1999: Samantha starts kindergarten Event description: Samantha starts kindergarten with her brand new family. Camila and David share her history with the school teachers and administration at Hopkins Village Elementary School. March 2000: Parent-Teacher Conferences for Samantha Event description: Samantha’s kindergarten teacher reports that Samantha seems to daydream a lot. She seems quiet and withdrawn, and is not engaging with others. She always sits at the back of the class and wants to be alone. She rarely answer questions or asks questions during class. March 2003: Jim is born Timeline of the Barnes Family Event description: Jimmy is born into the Barnes family and is welcomed by Camila, David, and older sister, Samantha. July 2003: Camila passes away Event description: Camila gets sick and doesn’t recover. David suffers from grief for the next two years. November 2003: Parent-Teacher Conferences for Samantha Headline Event description: At Samantha’s conference, her 4th grade teacher reports that Samantha’s grades have plummeted this school year. She is often overly emotional and overstimulated. During class, she will get angry and cry a lot, but all of a sudden it stops. When this happens, it is as if she is in another place. Her teacher complains that sometimes full classes go by with Samantha doing nothing. However, other times she seems fine. December 2003: Samantha starts therapy Event description: Based on the feedback from teachers and what he is seeing, David finds a therapist for Samantha to help her. They discover that Samantha is struggling with dissociation. She probably has for most of her life, but the death of her adopted mom, Camila, has resurfaced trauma. The therapist and David work on figuring out how to treat Samantha. January 2005: David is diagnosed with medical depression Event description: After suffering from grief for two years, David is now suffering from medical depression. This manifests as being apathetic, numb, and wanting to lay around a lot. He is disengaged from the kids, and is not enjoying things. October 2006: Samantha starts working with her second therapist Event description: Samantha has not responded to treatment with her first therapist, so David decides to find her a new therapist. She still is regularly getting overstimulated emotionally. There aren’t many therapy options in Hopkins Village, so David travels with Samantha weekly to East Egg to receive treatment at Wellness Outpatient Mental Health. September 2008: Jimmy starts kindergarten Event description: Jimmy starts classes at Hopkins Village Elementary School. Timeline of the Barnes Family November 2008: Parent-Teacher Conferences for Jimmy Event description: Jimmy’s kindergarten teacher reports that it seems that Jimmy doesn’t fit in very well. He has a hard time sharing and making friends. He is showing signs of issues regulating emotions and behavior. When he gets angry, he blurts out things. He hits kids if he wants to get something. The teacher also shares that Jimmy has trouble transitioning from reading rug to math. He is very active physically, and has trouble paying attention and focusing. The teacher describes Jimmy as “being driven by a motor all day long.” She says that she thinks he’s overactive because he’s 5. September 2010: Jimmy starts second grade Event description: Shortly after the school year starts, Jimmy’s teacher refers him to the school’s guidance counselor, who contacts David because he is behaving oddly in class. He still doesn’t have friends, and is combative with peers. The guidance counselor shares that she is concerned that he might be depressed or having a hard time at home. At school, he’s acting apathetic. He doesn’t seem to care, and has told the guidance counselor and teacher repeatedly that it doesn’t bother him if he gets bad grades. December 2010: Samantha enrolls in intensive behavioral treatment Event description: Samantha has not responded to treatment with any of her therapists, so David enrolls her in an intensive behavioral treatment at Richmond Hills Residential Treatment Center where they live in cabins outside. The goal of this treatment is self regulation of emotions, and working through trauma.
