CNDV 5320: Multicultural Counseling Final Project Final Project Overview The Final Project is self-reflective in nature. To complete the assignment, you will write a letter to your younger self in which you inform your child-self of the cultural influences that have shaped your worldview, of barriers that have impeded your ability to embrace diverse others, of critical incidents that have expanded your views of self and others, of the lessons you’ve learned from the critical incidents, and of the strides that you have made (and will continue to make) toward becoming a more open, accepting, and multiculturally competent individual and counselor. Then, you will use Yuja to record an oral recitation or your letter. Review the Final Project Rubric for information about grading criteria. Instructions for Writing the Letter Think of yourself as you were at 7-years-old, and consider the following questions: What do you remember hearing from the adults in your life at that time? What messages did they send you about people who were different from you? What biases did others ingrain in you? What assumptions did you have about people who weren’t like you? As you continued to develop, what critical incidents occurred that challenged what you learned about others as a child? Were there any critical encounters that stretched your worldview? Looking back at your younger self, how far do you think you’ve come regarding your acceptance of and appreciation for diversity? What else needs to happen to develop your multicultural competence even more? Then, write a letter to your 7-year-old self that is 3-5 typed, double-spaced pages in length. The letter does not need to follow APA formatting guidelines, so it does not need to include a cover page or a references page. However, it must be evenly double-spaced from the first to the last words, and the font must be 12-point. In the letter: • Use second-person pronouns to address your younger self (e.g., you, yours); • Refer to yourself at your current age with first-person pronouns (e.g, I, me); • Use language that is developmentally appropriate for a 7-year-old; • Explain your early childhood experiences that taught you how to think (and how not to think) about people who were different from you; • Describe a critical incident in adolescence that supported or challenged the biases that you learned in childhood; • Describe at least 2 critical incidents in adulthood that challenged the biases you learned in childhood, that stretched your worldview, and/or that increased your capacity to feel empathy for people who are different from you; • Explain the progress that your younger self will make between age 7 and your current age in the journey toward becoming a multiculturally competent person; • Identify the ways that you need to continue to grow in your journey toward becoming a multiculturally competent counselor; and • Explain the value of multicultural competence to your younger self and encourage your younger self to continue progress toward becoming a safe and culturally responsive counselor for future clients. An example of a partial letter is provided at the end of this document. 1 CNDV 5320: Multicultural Counseling Final Project Instructions for Recording the Oral Recitation After you’ve written the letter, open the file that contains your letter. Then, login to the Blackboard course and click the “My Yuja” link at the bottom of the page. When Yuja opens, follow these instructions for recording an oral recitation of your letter: 1. Click “Create Recording” at the top of the screen. (If you’ve never created a Yuja video, then you will be prompted to download the Yuja recording software to your computer. You must do this before you can continue through these steps.) 2. Click “Start” in the box that prompts you to create a recording. 3. In the next box that appears, click “Open Yuja Software Capture”. 4. When the Yuja Software Capture screen opens, make sure that you see an image of yourself, an image of your computer screen, and a Mic Source gauge to the right of menu. To test your Mic Source, say something aloud and watch the gauge for back-and-forth movement. 5. When your Mis Source is ready, then, click the red “Start” button in the bottom right corner of the Yuja Software Capture screen. When you do this, a visual timer will begin to count down from 3 to 1. 6. While the timer is counting down, minimize the Yuja Software Capture screen and pull up the file that contains your letter. 7. When the countdown ends, recording will start, so begin reading your letter aloud. Make sure that you read your letter from the file on the screen so that both you and the letter are visible in your recorded video. 8. When you are done reading your letter, click the red square on the Yuja toolbar at the bottom right corner of your screen to stop the recording. The toolbar looks like this: 9. In the box that pops up, click “Save”. Instructions for Submitting the Assignment After you create the video, go to the Final Project assignment link in the Week 5 module and click it. Then: 1. Scroll down until you see the “Assignment Submission” section and click the “Add Content” button. 2. When the content box opens, click the “+” plus sign with the circle around it. 3. From the drop down menu, select “LTI Item”. 4. Then, select “Yuja Media”. 5. It might take a minute for your Yuja videos to populate on the next screen. When they do, click on the video that you want to share and then click the “Insert Videos” button. 6. Finally, browse your computer files for the file that contains the letter, attach it to the assignment before you submit it. Accommodation for Students with Hearing Impairments If you have a hearing impairment, then you can record your oral recitation using ASL to sign the content. 2 CNDV 5320: Multicultural Counseling Final Project Example of a Partial Letter This example does not represent a fully developed letter. It is a partial letter that is provided only to help you understand how to “talk” to your younger self in the letter that you will write. Do not copy any of the letter in whole or in part when writing your own. Dear (My Name), It’s me, your older self at age _____! I was thinking about you, and I wanted to share some info that I hope will help you to become all that you don’t even know you want to become at age 7. You’ve always been good at making friends, but at your age, you’ve never noticed that none of your friends look different than you, have you?
