For this assignment you will: 1. choosing 2 primary sources that relate to the time period & topic you chose in your 2nd timeline (find the timeline at end of this doc). 2. writing a report on the historical context for your sources, particularly with respect to your chosen topic or theme Choose 2 Primary Sources & submit a copy or link for each Remember that a primary source is anything produced at the time you are studying. Newspapers, land deeds, court records, government documents, letters, [the list is nearly endless] If you are uncertain where to start, I recommend trying: The Library of Congress – https://www.loc.gov/ The National Archives – https://www.archives.gov/ DocsTeach – https://www.docsteach.org/documents/documents Salem Witch Trials – https://salem.lib.virginia.edu/home.html Your 2 primary sources should be items that you can compare with one another for your analysis in the next stage. I am hesitant to give examples, because there are so many different directions that you could go on this, & people tend to limit themselves to the ideas in the instructions. I will give you 2 examples here, but these are just ideas; think creatively about your own topic & sources. example 1: The transcription of all of the court documents from the Salem Witch Trials are at thelink above. You could compare the questions asked of 2 different accused individuals (eg man vs woman; mother vs daughter). Is the questioning the same in both cases? What differs & why? example 2: Compare the service records of two soldiers in the Mexican-American War (https:// catalog.archives.gov/search-within/654520?objectType=“pdf”). How are they similar & different? Why? The Report 1) *** The tertiary & secondary sources for this report will be the online Yawp textbook & course readings. If you feel that you must bring in another tertiary or secondary source, it must be from an academic or peer reviewed source, & you must get your TA’s approval well before submitting this assignment. 2) Your report should let your reader know the who, what, where, when of your larger historical context. [For example, if you were comparing articles from 2 different newspapers on the trial & execution of John Brown after Harper’s Ferry in 1859, you would want to explain what led to the insurrection, both nationally & more locally, & say something about who John Brown was. If the newspapers are from 2 different regions of the country, explain how those regions differed.] 3) Your report should let your reader know the who, what, where, when of your particular source(s). [eg. for the example in #2 above, is one newspaper Democrat & one Republican?Explain why that matters to what you expect from the articles.] 4) cite your secondary & tertiary sources!; you do not need to use a particular format, but your TA needs to know what you used, & in the case of secondary sources who wrote it, when it was published, & where you found it. Wikipedia & history.com are NOT acceptable sources for this assignment. 5) The report should be 3-5 pages, 12 point font, double-spaced 6)flow of your report should make sense &be both clear & concise. For example, a few pointers: – Do not repeat information: do not give us an intro & then repeat exactly the same data in your report. You don’t have a ton of space; you want to give us as much information as you can in that short space. – Do not waste space on phrases like: ‘in conclusion’, ‘to begin with’, ‘in summary’, ‘before X we must understand Y’, ‘I think that’ – learn to cut anything that is fluff & carries no solid information. – If you have a paragraph that is close to a full page or more, you will repeat this stage. Paragraphs serve two purposes (1) to break up material for your reader, & (2) to indicate to your reader a logical flow to the material you are presenting. Paragraph length is proportional to the length of the overall text. Aim for 5 sentences per paragraph as a rule of thumb for a short paper like this. – avoid the word ‘throughout’; Timeline #2: focused on a topic that you want to investigate for the full project For this timeline, I would like to talk about women’s rights in terms of women’s role in working place in American history through Lowell mill girls. As we all know that men usually play the role of breadwinners and women as homemakers, but nowadays more and more engage in working place to find their values. 1834: Strikes of 1834 at Lowell mill: because of the decision of cutting wages, the mill girls made a strike to fight back and signed a petition asking for the unchanging wage, but it failed. However, this shows these girls’ determination and action to fight for their rights in working place. 1836: the second strike at Lowell mill: a second strike broke out because of cute wages and increased rent, these girls stopped working again and they established the Factory Girls’ Association, but it still failed. However, this strike had better organization and support and also had a large impact on the operation of the mill. 1838 1840: female workers at Lowell mill: because of the height of Industrial Revolution in America, more than 8,000 workers worked at the Lowell textile mills and 4/3 of these labor forces were women. 1842: wages after reduction: before the cut of wages, a worker can earn 14 dollars 52 cents for 24 days, after the cut, they only can earn 13 dollars and 52 cents for the same working days. 1844 1845: the Lowell Female Labor Reform Association (LFLRA): this is the first union for American working females. This association was established to fight for better rights for female workers in terms of wages, working conditions, working hours and so on. 1846: the adoption of Voice of Industry: the Voice of Industry was a newspaper made by workers and the LFLRA took charge of it in 1846 and took it as a tool for male and female workers to express their ideas. 1847: The Ten-hour Workday: the constant petition by female workers and the publish of article on Voice of Industry along with other labor force associations forced mills to implement 10 hour workday. 1848: The dissolution of LFLRA: this association was dissolved in 1848,and these female workers continued their petitions for better working conditions and wages. 1850: the replacement of female workers by immigrants: these female workers at mills were fired and immigrants became new workers here. However, these former workers continued to work as teachers and other jobs in other industries. 1852 1853: 11 hour Workday: companies agreed to reduced working hours to 11 hours per day although this did not meet workers’ requirement for 10 hours, it was a great profess resulted from female workers’ effort. 1854
