Writing Assignment 1: Job Advertisement Analysis Dr. Tucker Steffen | IDS 493 Guidelines: For this assignment you will locate at least 1 job advertisement for a position in your field and read it closely to analyze the skills of the desired candidate and how your own skillset reflects the expectations of your field. The ad you select should ideally be for a position that you would apply for. You can find job advertisements at indeed.com, monster.com, and jobs.virginia.gov, as well as the web site of a company you might want to work for. If you have other sources for jobs, please feel free to use those. You may share ads you find with your group whether you plan to discuss that ad in your paper or not, since you are permitted to analyze the same ad as a classmate. Requirements: Your analysis will be 4 to 5 double-spaced pages and should use APA format (no abstract required). It should 1) summarize the company & purpose of the job as well as its main responsibilities, 2) discuss the skills required by referencing AND citing SPECIFIC key terms/phrases from the ad itself (how to cite web sites), 3) “read between the lines” to discern how the ad text and organization of skills/responsibilities can give you a better idea of position and company requirements while applying terms we’ve read about in class, 4) relate how your SPECIFIC courses/internships have prepared you for these skills, 5) apply concepts we’ve learned from class readings (including Harper, Atkinson, Henry, Harris & Clayton, Smith, Nguyen). Ads will list both hard and soft skills, but sometimes these are implied. For example, an ad may not list communication skills as a requirement, but it will list communication among a number of job responsibilities. This is something you might identify and discuss in your analysis. *Important* This is an analysis paper, so it should not merely summarize the ad or give circular descriptions of what the ad is doing. This is also an essay, so it should have an introduction, thesis, conclusion and references page. Your thesis should indicate the direction the paper will take, and your references should cite the ad in addition to sources you use to analyze it (such as course readings). Be sure to cite when paraphrasing the ad. To help you pick apart the job ad and determine what to write about, consider the following questions (but please don’t write your paper as a series of answers to these questions): 1. What is the overall role of this position with the organization? Does it have a unique name or level (rank I. II, etc.) that suggests it may require more career experience rather than academic experience? Cite any text from the ad that helps you draw these conclusions. 2. What skills, experience, qualifications, and training are listed in the selection criteria? Consider how the ad’s organization of the desired skills suggest which are most important. How do these skills compare to the soft skills discussed in class readings? 3. Considering the duties of the position, what additional unstated skills, experience, qualifications, and training do you think might be useful for the role? 4. Considering the context of the job and the company, what are the important current and future motivators? What do you know about growth in this industry that could contribute to the demand for this position? 5. What are your reasons for wanting this position and why does your degree make you a good candidate? Do you see key terms that might connect to courses you have taken (e.g. communication or network security directly connect to specific courses)? Be sure to quote terms you refer to from the ad and be specific about your coursework. 6. What is the company’s culture? This may require you to do some research about the company, but also consider how words or phrases used in the ad characterize the company. What skills and personal qualities would fit with the culture of the organization? Consider our class readings about “narrative choices” and “life stories” and how your own personal history would make you a good fit for this company’s culture. 7. “Read between the lines” of the ad text to identify at least one soft skill you probably need for this job (e.g. time management) but which isn’t explicitly stated. What is it about the ad that makes you think this skill will be important for this job? What do our class readings say about this particular skill? Cite and quote phrases you use from the ad. 8. What kinds of challenges are you likely to face the person in this role? Does the wording in the ad seem encouraging? How does the ad’s presentation make you feel about working for the company? 9. As you conclude the paper, remember to remind readers of the main ideas in your analysis. Also consider what you learned from the ad that might affect how you’ll continue in your academic career in preparation for jobs like this one. Job ad analysis paper excerpt example: Considering the duties for this position, I believe that there are some additional qualifications, skills, experience, and training that could be useful for this role. The job ad specifically mentions that the candidate must have background knowledge in the financial representative industry because the candidate will be hiring potential representatives for the company. The job ad text tells us that this is a crucial qualification/skill, and that the candidate needs to be educated in the field and it would be helpful to have some past experience in the financial industry. The job ad also states under their qualifications that they require a “two years progressively responsible work experience preferred, ideally in sales recruiting or financial services industry, and strong communication skills required with the ability to build rapport and influence others” (2020). I believe that this role would also require some background experience with onboarding. Being hired as Director of Recruitment, means a lot of responsibility for the onboarding process; the potential candidate will need to be proficient in communication skills, leadership skills, and the selection process. I will be responsible for my work and any potential HR-related employees could be reporting to me. I will also be reporting to a higher management most likely, and or board of executives. This means the candidate must be a skilled leader to carry out the duties associated with the position. According to Harris and Clayton’s editorial in the International Journal of Training Research, “Industry expects students to possess and/or develop generic skills that enable employees to work as part of the organization” (2019). In this case, candidates should have broad leadership skills like organization and communication. To be the director of a department in an organization, you will most likely need experience in that field prior to being hired as director, including HR certificates and or a degree in Leadership or Business Management. The job ad text helps create meaning by using specific verbiage to address the qualifications, skills, and job duties for the potential candidates. The job ad uses words such as execute, manage, develop networks, promote, direct, and administer. All of these words used to describe the job are related to leadership/management positions. They show their candidates what the company is looking for and what kind of role the candidate will be embracing. It also allows people to find roles that they are looking for with those types of qualifications. A candidate is most likely looking for a role that fits their skills; if they hold these skills, it may be easier to pinpoint and filter out which job ads they search by using some specific texts in their search engine. Someone that is looking for a role in the industry that had the qualifications to fulfill these types of responsibilities will have an easier time locating job ads by these specific details in the text.
