1/30/24, 2:55 PM ⭐ Population Migration & Clustering Project Part 2: Draft Paper ⭐ Population Migration & Clustering Project Part 2: Draft Paper Start Assignment Due Tuesday by 11:30pm Points 20 Submitting a file upload File Types doc, docx, and pdf Available Jan 15 at 12am – Mar 22 at 11:30pm Overview In this project you will explore the where of population distribution in the USA. Your final product is a 500-800 word paper discussing the migration and settlement patterns of one major ethnic/race group within the United States with a focus on a specific region of your choice. The purpose of this project is to identify where there are clusters of a specific ethnic/race group of your choice, and to hypothesize some reasons for that clustering based on research into the migration history of that group. This project consists of three parts. I encourage you to review all three to get an idea of the big picture for this project. Part 1: Map & identify patterns (https://foothillcollege.instructure.com/courses/25690/assignments/832013) Part 2: Paper outline (this part) Part 3: Final paper (https://foothillcollege.instructure.com/courses/25690/assignments/832012) – Due week 6 What you will do in this part of the project This is Part 2 of the project, where you will identify sources and draft an outline for your paper using Chat GPT or other AI software of your choice. In this part of the project you will select one of your three maps and research patterns of diversity and ethnic (race) clusters in the United States of America identified in the map and outline your final paper. https://foothillcollege.instructure.com/courses/25690/assignments/832011?module_item_id=2360437 1/5 ⭐ Population Migration & Clustering Project Part 2: Draft Paper 1/30/24, 2:55 PM Instructions Identify patterns 1. Select one of the three maps you created for Part 1 of this project. This could be one of the race maps, or the diversity index or the population growth map. 2. Identify clusters and patterns in the map. Focus on the county level. Select one cluster to focus on. Research patterns that you identify Visit the Foothill Library (see the link on the left side of your screen). Research the reasons/history behind the clusters and patterns that you have identified. Identify at least three web-based resources and any additional print resources that discuss migration and clustering of the race group you selected in the location you selected. List these in MLA format and write a one paragraph summary of the main ideas in each resource. As you work on your project consider the following questions: 1. Location: Where where are there clusters of different ethnic groups in the USA? 2. Push & pull factors: Why did the populations migrate? 3. Forced or voluntary: How and when did the migration take place? The first question is fairly straightforward. The second and third questions are extremely complex. Summarize with AI 1. Use Chat GPT or another AI software of your choice to generate a 400-500 word essay examining the clusters you identified in your map. We will use this as a starting point for your final paper. Resources for your research The following are good starting points for learning about the history of migration of different race groups in the United States. Asian Black Hispanic Native American Pacific Islander White/Diversity Index Foundations of immigration patterns find their roots in the following laws: Bracero Program (1942) (https://guides.loc.gov/latinx-civil-rights/bracero-program) Immigration Act of 1924 (https://history.state.gov/milestones/19211936/immigration- https://foothillcollege.instructure.com/courses/25690/assignments/832011?module_item_id=2360437 2/5 ⭐ Population Migration & Clustering Project Part 2: Draft Paper 1/30/24, 2:55 PM act#:~:text=The%20Immigration%20Act%20of%201924%20limited%20the%20number%20of%2 (National Origins Act) Immigration Act of 1965 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immigration_and_Nationality_Act_of_1965#:~:text=President%20 Central American (https://www.migrationpolicy.org/article/central-american-immigrants- united-states-2017) (Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua) Cuban (https://www.migrationpolicy.org/article/cuban-immigrants-united-states-2018) Dominican (https://www.migrationpolicy.org/article/dominican-immigrants-united-states2019) Mexican (https://www.migrationpolicy.org/article/mexican-immigrants-united-states-2017) Tips for using ChatGPT ChatGPT (https://chat.openai.com/) is a free open web based Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI can be a very useful tool for formulating ideas and synthesizing material on the web. It is, however, only a starting point. One of the goals of this project (along with learning more about migration and clustering of ethnic groups) is to practice smart use of AI in your work. The writing of ChatGPT can be stilted and clunky. Sometimes it is also inaccurate. We are going to use AI to generate a first draft and then edit and fact check the results in our final draft. Here are some tips for using ChatGPT to generate useful results: Give ChatGPT parameters: Ask for a specific number of words (”write me 400-500 words”) Tell it what you want (”summarize the patterns of migration and clustering of the — race group in —-location”) Read what ChatGPT gives you. If it does not hit the mark, try rephrasing your question until you get results that give you what you are looking for What to turn in In a single PDF document submitted as an attachment: The URL to the map that is the focus of your paper At least three MLA formatted web-based resources with a one paragraph summary of each The prompt you used to ask ChatGPT for your 400-500 word summary The ChatGPT summary of the push and pull factors behind the clustering you have identified and whether it is forced or voluntary clustering. https://foothillcollege.instructure.com/courses/25690/assignments/832011?module_item_id=2360437 3/5 1/30/24, 2:55 PM ⭐ Population Migration & Clustering Project Part 2: Draft Paper In the final draft you will edit what ChatGPT has provided you into a refined discussion.
