Exploring Art Essay
PROCESS: How to begin developing your essay
- Be mindful, meaning pay careful attention to your thoughts as you are reviewing the material.
- Read the Introduction Chapter in Gateways. If you do not yet have your textbook, you will see an abridged PDF of the chapter under “Mod. 1 Learning Material.” You will need the textbook for Mod. 2’s assignment.
- Watch the Smarthistory video linked in iCollege “Why Look At Art?” (1’55”) <<This means the video is one minute, 55 seconds.
- After watching the video, write stream-of-consciousness thoughts about the importance of art to you. How has it touched your life? Do you wish that you had been more deeply involved in the arts? How would you like art to be a part of your future? Let your thoughts flow. If you draw a blank, just be good to yourself. Take a walk if you have time, splash cold water on your face, breathe in—breath out.
- DO NOT use Google to seek an ‘answer.’ Find your own way to respond.
- Can you form your brainstorming into a coherent essay?
CONTENT
The thesis or focus of your paper will be why do you think that we look at art?
- Consider the ideas and questions discussed in Chapter 1: What is art? Where do we find art? Who makes art?
- Include personal anecdotes to support your idea.
- You could ask yourself–why are you interested in taking this class? Do not worry if your first answer is that it was the only open class to achieve Humanities credit, just be sure to step beyond those thoughts.
- Organize your thoughts, returning to your notes from the video “Why do we look at art?” Then, edit your ideas to develop a clear and cohesive essay.
- When appropriate, use vocabulary and ideas from this mod.’s learning material.
- Your prof loves it when you use quotes from your readings.
- Review the file in iCollege on Concise Writing.
- Include images if they support your vision. You should copy and paste them directly into your document. If they are large images, be sure to resize them so they are small and viewable.
- In your essay, you are required to reference information in addition to your textbook. Review at least one article or video posted in the Assignment area of Mod.1, such as “What do you see in Art” and “Off the Beat and into the Museum,” which could be of special interest to those of you studying Forensics, Criminal Justice, or really any field where you use visual evidence to make a decision such as Nursing.
