English Economic Aspects of Adopting Electric Vehicles Essay
EXERCISE
Consider the following activities to help you decide on how to finalize your draft:
- Peer and Instructor Feedback/Your Own Analysis: Review the feedback you’ve received. Which specific pieces of feedback do you plan to make use of as you revise for the final draft?
- Analysis: Have you analyzed as fully as possible? Try “layering” — explore your ideas by looking at each paragraph and identifying where readers might want more, or where your reviewers said they wanted more or didn’t understand something. Layer in sentences to add and explain fully.
- Pruning: Just like pruning in a garden, you want to get rid of weeds that have your reader entangled in words but that cloud your ideas. Where could you simplify or clarify? Where are you too wordy? Can you revise a sentence so that its meaning is clearer and your wording is clear and efficient?
- Focus: Do you have “orphan” sentences or paragraphs that don’t connect to other ideas? Get rid of those, or ask a classmate for a second opinion. Focus in on your words, and be sure each paragraph is organized around one main idea, so a reader can follow easily.
- Conclusion: Have you answered the “so what” or does it need more work? Do you offer something significant for readers to take away? Or do you just end? What can you do with your conclusion to convey something important, suggest an implication, or suggest a future researcher follow specifically? Be sure to drill down to what’s really important about your topic or research, not just add more of the same.
- Introduction: Go back again to the introduction. The best time to write the intro is when everything else is done — once you know how you’re concluding, you can write a better intro that gets at the heart of what your essay will address, and hints at what readers can expect. How can you draw readers in? How can you set them up to be interested in reading further?
- Final Proofread: Try reading aloud, now or later. Reading aloud ensures our brains don’t tell our eyes to skip over what we think we see. Make yourself say it out loud so you’ll catch those errors or awkward places you want to adjust. Even better, have a classmate read your draft to you so you can hear how it sounds to a reader. When your classmate stumbles over wording, it highlights something that you need to improve on.
EXIT TICKET
On a piece of paper, write down two indications for improvement that came up through this exercise, and what you’ll do about them before you finalize the draft.
