As a nurse who treats high-acuity patients and their families, I am aware of how important health advocacy is to guarantee the provision of secure, comprehensive, and patient-centered care. Providing medical solutions is only one aspect of advocacy; other activities include empowering patients and their families, advancing their legal rights, and enabling their active involvement in decision-making. Effective communication is one of the essential skills needed to support families in this type of care setting. Establishing rapport, developing trust, and cultivating a therapeutic relationship with patients and their families all depend on caring and transparent communication (Juvé‐Udina et al., 2020). As a nurse, I will try to be open and empathetic in my communication with patients and their families. I will also try to answer any questions they may have and give them clear information about their illness and the available treatments options. Moreover, I will be also providing families with the tools they need to fully participate in care planning and speak up for their needs and preferences by encouraging candid communication and collaborative decision-making.
Additionally, cultural competence is another essential skill for helping families in the high-acuity care setting. Providing culturally sensitive care requires an understanding of and respect for the various cultural backgrounds, beliefs, and values that patients and their families may have (Smith & Sweet, 2019). In my work as a future nurse, I will try to approach every patient and family with cultural humility, admitting my own prejudices and trying to comprehend and respect their cultural customs and preferences. I will foster a friendly, inclusive care environment where families feel appreciated, valued, and understood by exhibiting cultural competency. Furthermore, to address the complex needs of patients and their families, nurses should collaborate with interdisciplinary teams that include doctors, therapists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals (Saint-Pierre et al., 2019). Nurses may guarantee smooth care coordination and enable comprehensive support for families across the care continuum by cultivating strong connections and encouraging interdisciplinary communication and collaboration. In addition, to enhance my capacity to deliver safe, high-acuity care and assist families in an efficient manner, I will place a high value on continuous professional development and introspection. To improve my clinical knowledge, skills, and competences, I will take advantage of chances for ongoing learning, such as attending seminars, taking part in case discussions, and asking mentors and colleagues for feedback. I will also constantly evaluate my work, noting where I can do better and investigating methods to develop my teamwork, communication, and cultural competency. To effectively advocate for the needs and rights of high acuity patients and their families, I will work to deliver empathy, patient-centered care by embracing a growth mindset and making a commitment to lifelong learning and self-improvement.
