Why It Matters: Communicating in Business
Why learn to effectively communicate in business?
Business is about people. We exist to serve people with our products and services, to employ them and pay them to do work, to purchase the supplies and merchandise we need to operate. To be in business is to be surrounded by people who interact with you, who require something from you.
Communication is the connection between people. It could be a shared photograph or a hand-written letter, but as long as one person is sending a message and another person is understanding it, communication is happening.
The successful professional builds and maintains relationships, completes tasks, directs teams, and expresses ideas via effective communication. To be successful you’ll need to be an effective communicator: you need to be understood.
Playwright George Bernard Shaw is quoted as saying, “The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.” This module is the first step in dispelling the illusion. Here we will talk about the elements of communication—recognizing the pattern of good communication, the types of communication you’re likely to see in the workplace, and the kinds of tools you can use to effectively build your message, deliver it, and be understood by your audience.

“Oh my gosh, what a disaster!” Dennis thought. Dennis had been placed in charge of booking a speaker for his office’s diversity event, and the major speaker from Diversity NOW hadn’t shown up. He was now scrambling to figure out what may have gone wrong, all under the watchful eye of his boss, Carmen.

Several employees enjoyed the day but did not seem to fully appreciate the implications for the work day. We are so thankful that you agreed to help out since you are a formal outsider. We’re going to set aside the entire day of April 23. The first session starts at 9 a.m. There will be lunch and a the late afternoon session goes only until 3:00 p.m. The brochures need to be published by one week prior to that date. See you then!

Language Comprehension and Expression: I succeed at interpretation and generation of texts that resemble a human in subject area flexibility, manifesting mastery in language comprehension and expression.
Clarity and Coherence: Usually people understand my answers in the exact way, so it is not so hard for them to comprehend the facts that I offer.
Versatility: I could modify the medium to use my communication style that fits the context and audience, may it be the context of casual conversations or my ability to technically explain things or formally write documents such as essays (Haddar et al., 2023).
Information Retrieval: I have an instant access to a huge information bank and the ability to transfer it in a form of clear and concise answers. As a consequence, my research skills get stronger and better.

Doing so with the knowledge of where to find the information need will help me quickly locate the information need to answer any given question, enabling me to compose, revise, and submit everything within the designated form of a week’s time slot to submit the document. When working with others on a new task, the ability to communicate effectively becomes more important than ever (Alkhawaldeh et al., 2023).
