One of the reasonsbehind this is that the problem-solving process is rushed and focusesmainly on finding the quickest and easiest salutation instead of takingthe time to determine the solution that adds the most value. Toyota’smethod for problem solving, on the other hand, uses a systematic processwhich frames the problem, finds the root cause, and then experiments toensure the problem if fixed the most adequate way. There are 8 steps tothis problem-solving process (Lean Enterprise Academy, 2014):Clarifying the problemBreakdown of the problemSet a targetAnalyze the root causeDevelop countermeasuresSee countermeasures throughMonitor the process and resultsStandardize successful processesSteps 1-4 in the process ensure that the correct problem is beingaddressed in the right way. Before moving to a new position at mycompany, I was a Campaign Manager that worked with a team of 10-20agents at a time. My agents were trained to respond to tickets fromstudents or upcoming students for an online school. Because this was avery professional setting, it was important that every ticket wasanswered efficiently. Using Toyota’s 8 step method, clarifying theproblem would begin with finding the ticket that was incorrectlyanswered, then breaking down the problem to determine what was incorrectabout the response. Next would be setting a target for preventing itfrom occurring again, and then determining the root cause of the ticketbeing answered incorrectly. Developing countermeasures could includeadditional training for the agent who responded to the ticket, make surethey understand what was wrong and how to prevent it from happeningagain, then monitoring the agent and the tickets they respond to andalso make sure that all other agents understand as well to standardizethe process.References:Lean Enterprise Academy. Standardize Successful ProcessThis is a similar process I used while in the military to help mewith a self contained breathing apparatus program I was managing. I tookover this program and there were so many problems I needed to implementa way for me to work through the program in and address each problem ina regimented way. A specific problem I had to address was tracking ofthe equipment. I clarified that I needed to track the equipment. Thenneeded to address why it was a problem and the tracking was hard for tworeasons, one being the sheer number of equipment, and second it wasbeing used and moved by about 100 people. I then set a target orexpectation for tracking the equipment. And figured out the root causeof why the equipment was so hard to track. I developed a counter measureand it entailed making people responsible for the equipment in theirpossession. I monitored the process and made some changes. Finally, oncethe process was complete to my liking it was implemented and writteninto a standard operating procedure.JeffShook, J.
