Using Qualitative Research to Inform Evidence-Based Practice
Qualitative research is used to investigate an issue to provide deeper insights into real-world problems. Rather than collecting numerical data points or intervening or introducing treatments like quantitative research, qualitative research fosters the generation of hypotheses to investigate and understand quantitative data (Tenny et al., 2022).
Qualitative question: How do nurses and doctors perceive the effectiveness of using the SBAR (situation, background, assessment and recommendation) tool in enhancing communication and collaboration to improve patient outcomes in Western State Hospital?
Why a Qualitative Research Design is Best to Support the Research Question
A qualitative research design is well- suited for this question because it allows for in-depth exploration and understanding of the subjects’ experiences, perspectives, and insights of nurses and doctors regarding the use of the SBAR tool. Through open ended interviews or focus groups, researchers can capture rich, nuanced data on the perceived effectiveness, challenges, and contextual factors influencing the tool’s impact on patient outcomes. Qualitative methods provide a holistic view, uncovering intricate details that quantitative approaches might not fully capture (Maxwell, 2021).
Potential Ethical Considerations
When conducting research, it is important to consider the potential ethical implications of the study and how it affects the participants and the study outcomes. The first area of consideration is obtaining informed consent from participants. Researchers must ensure that all participants involved within the study fully understand the objectives, potential risks, and benefits of the study prior to participating (Pietrzykowski & Smilowska, 2021).
The second ethical consideration is confidentiality via safeguarding the privacy of participants by making their responses anonymous thereby protecting sensitive information relating to their experiences. However, the rectitude of the published findings cannot be verified or replicated by others, and the scholarly community must trust the results of qualitative researchers published work (Dougherty, 2021).
Thirdly, researchers must ensure that subjects participating in the study is voluntary and that they understand they have the right to withdraw from the study at any time without any consequences.
The fourth ethical consideration is obtaining the necessary approval from the relevant ethical review boards, hospital or institution where the study will be conducted. Obtaining approval demonstrates to participants possible risks have been considered, minimized and deemed acceptable (Gelling, 2016).
The fifth ethical consideration is ensuring beneficence, that is, the study should be able to positively contribute to the field of nursing and healthcare practice without causing harm to participants or stakeholders (Cheraghi et al., 2023).
Finally, the researcher must engage in transparent and honest reporting of research findings, avoiding selective reporting that could misrepresent the impact of the SBAR tool. By addressing these potential ethical considerations, it will ensure that researchers conduct responsible and respectful research that upholds the well-being and rights of participants.
In conclusion, researchers conducting qualitative studies must first develop a research question and consider ethical implications for their study. Some potential ethical considerations are; informed consent, confidentiality, voluntary participation, research approval, and beneficence.
