Name of Video #1: Data Collection
1. Clearly state the purpose of the video. The purpose of this video is to explain how important it is to use data in the classroom. Using data helps the teachers and students be able to grow. It also helps teachers develop curriculum. There are different times throughout the day that the teachers collect data. Daily observations and assessments of students is a way of collecting data that is widely used in classrooms. There are many ways to collect data and many different reasons for collecting data, all of which are important for the student's growth and success.
2. Describe two accurate examples of developmentally appropriate practices that you
observed in the video. The first DAP principle I observed in this video is Principle 10 which states, “Play is an important vehicle for developing self-regulation as well as for promoting language, cognition, and social competence.” In this video we see this when the teachers are collecting their data as the children are playing. They do not disturb the children, but it is a good time to observe. Data like this can look at how the child is doing with their alphabet recognition which looks their cognitive development all while they are playing. One teacher stated that it might just look like the children are playing if you walk by the classroom. This is because the teachers make sure that the activities the children are doing are engaging and not stressful. The second DAP principle I observed in this video is Principle 3 which states, “Development and learning proceed at varying rates from child to child, as well as at uneven rates across different areas of a child’s individual functioning.” Because the teachers are always collecting data, they can understand how each child learns, the rate of which they are learning, and then the teacher can tailor lessons for each child. Collecting the data helps these teachers be able to create developmentally appropriate curriculum for their student.
3. Share a quote from the video with a detailed explanation of why you agree or disagree with the statement.
”Reflective supervision is always done in a supportive model. We always say that it’s never personal. Again, it’s always about the kids and the families.” (Angie, 3:25). In this quote Angie is talking about reflective supervision with the teachers. I agree with her statement because when teachers are getting feedback, the children should always be what is most

important. The feedback is about how the teacher can work on things for the benefit of the students. What can the teacher be doing to help the students become successful? That is what should happen with reflective supervision.
4. Provide a detailed description of something you learned or how your opinion on something may have changed after watching the video.
My thoughts are aligned with the topic expressed in this video. I think if we want our students to be successful it is important to collect data. This way we can track their progress throughout the school year and see what they need to work on. Collecting data also allows us to plan our lessons according to what each student needs help with. This allows us to tailor activities to each child. I think if there was not data collection in the classroom then we would be setting the children up for failure. While I thought this before I watched the video, I am more convince of it now.
5. Provide a detailed description of how something from the video could be applied in the classroom.
I would apply this knowledge in the classroom by keeping forms on clipboards accessible to teachers to be able to jot down observations and notes about students throughout the day. I would also record students during play time as well if it is permitted by the parents. I have never done video observations to collect data, but it is something I would like to try in my future classroom.
