How did psychology come into existence?
Introduction
Psychology is the scientific study of behavior, thought and emotions. It is a broad field of inquiry that includes research in all aspects of mind, brain and behavior across the lifespan. Psychology has been around since ancient times and its roots can be traced back to philosophers like Aristotle and Plato. In Germany, psychology was originally established as a discipline at Leipzig University before it spread to other countries like Great Britain, France and America.
Definition of Psychology
Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mind. It’s also a term that has come to mean many things over time, especially in popular culture. In its most basic sense, psychology involves the systematic investigation of how people think about their own selves and others—and how this thinking affects their behavior.
Psychologists study all aspects of human experience: emotions, values, personality traits and interests; motivation (or “drive”); perception; memory; learning; intelligence assessment or measurement etc..
History of Psychology
Psychology is the scientific study of mental processes and behavior. The word psychology comes from Greek words meaning “the study of life” or “the science that studies living beings.”
Psychology has been around since ancient times, but it didn’t receive its current name until 1879. Before then, psychologists used many different terms to describe their work: “psychology”; “physiology”, “physiognomy”, etc., but none of them were quite right for what they were attempting to do in those days—namely explore how humans think about themselves mentally (and physically). Finally someone came up with an idea: why don’t we start calling ourselves “psychologists”? And so it became common knowledge among those who studied these kinds
of things that they were psychologists!
Psychology at the University of Leipzig
Psychology was first taught at the University of Leipzig in 1879, when Wilhelm Wundt became professor of experimental psychology. The following year, he founded the first chair of experimental psychology in Germany and in 1883 he established a laboratory for psychological experiments.
Wundt also wrote textbooks on mental science and applied psychology which were published throughout Europe and America until 1914. In these publications he attempted to introduce new methods into psychology such as introspection (the study of one’s own mind) or functionalism (the belief that mental processes can be studied by comparing them with other biological systems).
Philosopher’s such as Aristotle and Plato made substantial contributions to psychology.
Psychology has its origins in the study of the mind and behavior. Philosophers such as Aristotle, Plato and others made substantial contributions to psychology by studying how different behaviors were controlled by different mental processes.
Aristotle was the first to study the mind and behavior; he believed that human beings were made up of three parts: body (or soma), soul (or psyche) and spirit (or pneuma). The body determines our actions; it acts on us through sensation or motion. The soul controls our thoughts, feelings and attitudes towards other people or things around us – this includes emotions such as anger or sadness when something happens which doesn’t go your way! Finally there is spirit which can be thought of as God in some religions because it allows you to do things like speak English without understanding much about who you are speaking with!
The University of Wurzburg became the first to establish a laboratory for the purpose of psychological research in 1879.
The University of Wurzburg became the first to establish a laboratory for the purpose of psychological research in 1879. In that year, there were only 23 universities in Germany, but by 1900 there were 125.
While psychology was first established as an academic discipline at Leipzig University in 1881 and Berlin’s Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität (today known as Humboldt Universität Berlin) in 1882, these two schools did not have laboratories until later years.
Psychology was initially established in Germany before spreading to other countries
Psychology was first established in Germany and spread to other countries. It’s now a global science.
Conclusion
Psychology is a field that has evolved over time with new discoveries and theories being added to the mix. Although the field has existed since ancient times, it was not until recently that researchers began to put together what we now know about human behavior. Psychology is one of many disciplines within psychology which includes areas such as social psychology and clinical psychology.
