Introduction

Nurses are the backbone of the health care system. They provide much-needed help to patients and their families, and they make a huge impact on the quality of care that people receive. In this article, we’ll explore some of the different ways nurses can specialize in nursing practice settings.

Nurse practitioner

Nurse practitioners (NPs) are registered nurses who have earned a master’s or doctoral degree in nursing. They can provide primary care, diagnose and treat illness, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and prescribe medications.

NPs work closely with physicians to coordinate care for patients with complex health needs. They also write referrals to other specialists when appropriate.

Clinical nurse specialist

Clinical nurse specialists are registered nurses with advanced education in a specific area of practice. They are experts in their field, providing expert advice to other nurses and other healthcare providers.

They may provide direct patient care, education and consultation on acute or chronic illness or injury such as:

• Clinical practice guidelines for the diagnosis and management of common conditions such as asthma, heart failure or diabetes mellitus

• Healthcare planning for individuals who require complex interventions at home (elderly)

Certified registered nurse anesthetist

Certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) are advanced practice nurses who have completed a graduate-level anesthesia program. They are the only nurses who can administer anesthesia, and they have additional training in pain management.

CRNAs can work in any specialty area of medicine, such as pediatrics, oncology or obstetrics/gynecology. The skills that make an excellent CRNA include acute care experience with patients undergoing surgery or other procedures; knowledge of pharmacology; familiarity with medical equipment; ability to communicate effectively with patients’ families; understanding how different drugs affect different people differently—and many more qualities!

Certified nurse midwife

Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM)

Certified Nurse Midwives are registered nurses with advanced education and training in the care of women, newborns and families during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. They work as autonomous midwives who practice autonomously and independently from other physicians or health care providers. CNMs must be licensed by their state to practice as an independent professional who provides maternity care services at a private location for patients who have not been seen by another doctor or midwife within 48 hours of delivery.

The American College of Nurse-Midwives certifies CNMs based on education standards established by The National Board of Certification in Obstetrics & Gynecology (NBCOC). These standards include:

• completion of an accredited Doctorate program that includes at least two years of nursing study;

• completion of an accredited Master’s degree program in midwifery;

• successful completion at least one year post-master’s graduation working under supervision while demonstrating competency through clinical experience while maintaining certification status through NBCOC examination process

Nurse educator

Nurse educators teach nursing students, usually in the classroom and sometimes in clinical settings. Some nurse educators also provide nursing care to patients with special needs, such as those who have physical or mental disabilities. Some work for hospitals or health systems and are responsible for teaching nurses how to care for these patients. These nurses may also assist other staff members who need assistance with educating patients about their disease/illness or treatment plan.

Nurse administrator

Nurse administrators are responsible for planning and directing the work of other nurses. They oversee budgets, monitor patient care schedules, develop policies and procedures, and make sure that staff members are following them.

Nurse administrators may be found in hospitals or health care organizations that employ a large number of nurses like doctors’ offices or nursing homes.

Nurse educators are responsible for educating other members of their team about how best to perform their duties so that they can provide quality care for patients every day at work or during home visits if needed. This position requires excellent communication skills as well as patience because it involves many hours spent teaching others how best to care for patients who may not speak English fluently yet still need help understanding what’s going on around them so they know when something needs attention immediately before something serious happens (like forgetting where one ends up after being put under anesthesia).
