Professional Counselor Identity
Introduction
If you’re looking for a personal or professional counselor, this article will help you find one who is right for you. Here are the top qualities of a good psychologist:
Fun and excitement
Counseling is a field that gives you the opportunity to help people and make a difference in their lives. You’ll be able to make an impact on your clients’ lives, whether it’s by helping them solve problems or just having fun with them. You may also find yourself getting paid for doing something you love!
When choosing which type of counselor you want to be, think about how much fun (and excitement) there could be in the work that comes with helping others. If you enjoy spending time outside with friends and family members, then becoming a therapist might be right up your alley!
Trustworthiness
-
Trustworthiness is an important element of a counselor’s identity. As the saying goes, “You can’t fake it till you make it.” A good counselor will always keep confidences and be honest in all dealings with clients, no matter how minor or serious the situation may be.
-
Trustworthiness also means being reliable: showing up on time for appointments and paying bills on time as well as being honest about your own strengths and weaknesses.
-
A good therapist needs to show consistency in their work ethic—not only during their sessions but also outside of them; if someone sees you consistently come through on promises made to them (such as meeting deadlines), then they will begin to trust what they hear from you when talking about personal issues at home or work situations that relate back home somehow
Intelligence
The term “intelligent” is used to describe someone who has knowledge, skills or abilities. You may think of intelligence as being like IQ or EQ (emotional quotient). In the popular book Freakonomics, Stephen Dubner and Steven Levitt argue that people with high IQs make more money than those with low IQs; however, their research also shows that this correlation is not always true. This makes sense: There are many factors at play in determining how much money someone makes—including their education level and occupation—and these two concepts aren’t necessarily directly related at all.
To demonstrate how your knowledge base can be measured against others’, consider this question: What does “intelligence” mean to you? If you’re like most people who identify as “intelligent,” it means having an understanding of complex topics in multiple areas (such as math); being able to see things from multiple perspectives; having good problem solving skills; and knowing when something isn’t working well enough so as not waste time on something else instead.”
Supportive
-
The counselor is supportive of the client.
-
The counselor listens to the client, and helps them develop a plan for their future.
-
The counselor believes in the client and encourages them to take steps towards their goals.
Compassionate
Compassion is the ability to feel what others feel. It’s a trait that all humans possess, but it’s often not used in our everyday lives. We don’t have compassion toward those around us unless they’re close friends or family members.
The key takeaway from this is this: compassion needs to be practiced on both sides of life – ourselves and others! Compassionate people are more likely to help others because they understand what they’re going through; moreover, compassionate individuals tend to do better at work (and life) than their less empathetic counterparts because they understand what motivates other people better than average people do themselves.
Reliability
Reliability is a trait that is often overlooked in the field of counseling. But it’s an important one to have, especially as a counselor who wants to build up your reputation and trustworthiness with clients.
-
Keep appointments: You should never cancel or reschedule a scheduled appointment without letting your client know first. This can result in feeling disrespected by their initial request, which will make them less likely to come back if you do so again!
-
Be on time: When you show up late for meetings with clients, it makes them feel like they’re wasting your time (and yours) when there could be other things going on besides waiting around for someone else’s availability problems outside of their control.”
Understanding
Understanding is the ability to understand another person’s thoughts, feelings, and actions. This can be difficult because humans are complex beings who often do not communicate their true feelings or motives. Understanding is a key component of counseling because it allows you to develop a relationship with your client that will allow them to open up more and share their struggles with you.
Understanding also plays an important role in being a counselor because it allows you to know how best to help people solve problems they face in life. It also helps prevent burnout from taking place when working at your job as a professional counselor; if there isn’t enough understanding between yourself and others around them (client), then there won’t be any motivation on either side towards helping each other out!
Self-aware
Self-awareness is the ability to recognize, manage and understand your own emotions and behaviors. It’s a key trait of successful counselors, who understand their strengths and weaknesses as well as those of others.
Being self-aware allows you to be more empathetic when working with people who are different from yourself. You may even discover that some people have learned ways of dealing with their emotions that work better than yours do!
Takeaway:
The takeaway is that you can use the following steps to help you identify and define your own professional counselor identity:
-
Write down all that you think of when someone says the word “professional counselor.” The more detailed your list, the better. If there are words on your mind that don’t seem relevant or important, write them down anyway. You’re just trying to get an idea of what qualifies as “professional” in this context.
-
Look at how many words there are on your list (and how many of them fall into each category). How many do not fit into any single category? What percentage of these are still relevant—in other words, can they still be used as part of a successful definition for yourself?
Conclusion
As you can see, there are many things that make for a great counselor. The most important thing is to focus on the qualities that make you unique and show those qualities. For example, if you’re funny, don’t hide it under a bushel!
