Introduction

Social psychologists use a variety of techniques to study human behavior, including surveys, experiments and observational studies. Each method has strengths and weaknesses, but all have one thing in common—they are designed to get at the answer to one particular question about how people behave in certain situations. Below we’ll look at five research methods that social psychologists use to gain insight into different questions.

Observation studies

Observational studies are useful for understanding the behavior of people in a social context. In this type of study, an observer can see what is happening and also hear what is being said. The observer can collect data and record it, ask questions about the situation or individuals involved (e.g., “Did you notice that?”), or even make predictions based on what they observe (e.g., “Based on my observation here at this party tonight…”).

Surveys

Surveys are a good choice for gathering data because they’re easy to administer and collect data. You can easily ask people questions about their attitudes, opinions, behaviors or perceptions.

Here’s an example of a survey question: “What is your favorite restaurant in town?” The answers are then recorded on paper or computer screen so that you can see how many people have responded as well as what kinds of answers they gave (e.g., favorite type of food). You’ll also get a sense for which restaurants are most popular among your participants’ friends or family members who live elsewhere but visit often enough at home because the places are convenient–or maybe just because they want something new every now & then!

Psychology experiments

Psychology experiments are the most common type of research, and they’re designed to test a hypothesis. A hypothesis is a statement about what you think will happen if you run your experiment.

In psychology, there are two types of experiments: discrete and continuous. Discrete experiments involve testing one variable while continuous experiments involve testing many variables at once (e.g., multiple treatments).

Test validity and reliability

In a social context, validity and reliability are the two most important factors for determining whether a test is useful. Validity refers to how well the test measures what it’s supposed to measure; reliability refers to how consistent results are on repeated administrations of a given test. An invalid or unreliable test can be useful if you’re trying to determine whether someone has psychosis or not (for example), but only when paired with other measures of psychopathology like hallucinations and delusions.

If we want our research methods to be valid, then we’ll need some way of making sure that our results are reliable—that they hold up across time and circumstances. This means that we’ll have access not just one measurement method (or set), but multiple ones so as not just look at one thing at once but compare different things against each other over time (like comparing two tests).

Using a combination of methods gives more accurate answers to questions.

Combining methods gives you a better understanding of the question posed in the field. In one study, researchers wanted to know if people looked at their phones while they were doing activities that involved social interactions or not. To find out, they asked participants to wear a smartphone-tracking device while they went about their daily lives and answered questions about how often they used their phones during specific activities (e.g., eating dinner). The researchers found that people who answered “yes” tended not only to be more likely than those who answered “no” but also did so without fail—they didn’t appear distracted by ambient noise or other stimuli around them when using their phones; rather than looking at their screens, most were focused on interacting with others around them rather than checking out what’s on display thereon . . .
