Learning theories
Introduction
Learning theory is a field of study concerning human learning and the mechanisms and processes involved. The main goal of learning theory is to provide a theoretical framework for understanding how people learn, why they learn and how best to help them in this process. There are many different theories about how people learn, which will be discussed below in more detail:
Behaviorism
Behaviorism is the idea that learning happens through rewards and punishments. The learner must be able to see the reward or punishment, connect it to their behavior, and repeat that behavior until they get a positive outcome. In other words, behaviorism states that motivation (what drives us) drives our actions (how we learn).
Behaviorists believe that humans are animals with instincts which guide them toward certain goals in life—for example: “If I eat this food now then I’ll be full later on.” This means humans don’t think about why they do things; rather it’s simply instinctual for them!
Cognitivism
Cognitivism is a theory that focuses on internal mental processes. It believes that learning is a result of mental processing, rather than external stimuli or physical experience. This school of thought emphasizes the importance of thinking, reasoning and memory.
Cognitivists believe that learning occurs through three main processes: encoding (sensory), storage (memory), retrieval (thought). These three steps can be broken down even further into sub-processes such as attentional selection and working memory allocation/duration management.
Constructivism
Constructivism is a theory of learning that emphasizes the active role of learners and the importance of their background knowledge in the learning process. It is based on the idea that learners construct their own meaning from their experiences, rather than passively absorbing information from teachers or textbooks.
The basic principle behind constructivism is that humans have a preference for subjective truth over objective truth. This led to an emphasis on constructing one’s own reality rather than merely accepting what others say as true (Denzin & Lincoln 2000). For example, when asked whether they would buy a product advertised on TV or radio, most people would say yes without hesitation; however once asked why they said yes (e.g., “because it’s cheap”), many people admitted that some other reasons (e.g., “I want to save money”) also influenced their decision-making process!
The three main learning theories are behaviorism, cognitivism and constructivism.
The three main learning theories are behaviorism, cognitivism and constructivism. Behaviorism is a theory that states that all learning is a result of environmental events. Cognitivism is a theory that states that all learning is a result of mental events; this includes implicit and explicit memory (which we’ll talk about later). Constructivism says that our brains construct new knowledge from previous experiences.
Conclusion
The learning theories are the different ways people learn. They can be divided into three main categories: behaviorism, cognitivism, and constructivism. These three theories were developed by two psychologists: B. F. Skinner and Jean Piaget respectively. Each has its own unique perspective on how we learn and what kinds of learning strategies work best
