Too often, discussions about quality health care, care costs, and outcome measures take place in isolation—each group talking among themselves about results and enhancements. Because nurses are critical to the delivery of high-quality, efficient health care, it is essential that they develop the proficiency to review, evaluate performance reports, and be able to effectively communicate outcome measures related to quality initiatives. The nursing staff’s perspective and the need to collaborate on quality care initiatives are fundamental to patient safety and positive institutional health care outcomes.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Quality Improvement Initiative Evaluation
Introduction
The purpose of the improvement initiative is to improve the effectiveness of your business by discovering and eliminating problems. To do this, you need the right tools and resources. This article will cover how to evaluate an improvement initiative using these tools:
evaluation
Evaluation is a process of collecting and analyzing information to assess the quality of a program. Evaluation can be applied to a single project or to an entire program. It helps identify problems and challenges, provide information that can be used to improve the program, and determine if there is room for improvement or if it has reached its goals.
measures
A measure is a way of measuring progress and success. It’s an indicator of progress, not the goal itself. Measures are used to track performance and determine where you are in relation to your target, or other goals that you have set for yourself.
Measures should be specific, measurable and achievable (SMMA). They should also be realistic and achievable for people at all levels of the organization—from senior executives down through managers on up!
data
Data is the foundation of a good evaluation. Without data, you cannot make decisions, measure progress or impact and identify areas for improvement.
Data should be collected in a way that allows all stakeholders to access it easily and at any point in time. Data can be stored on paper or in digital format (e-mail attachments). It often comes from multiple sources such as survey responses, interviews with staff members who have worked on projects similar to yours before; discussions with clients; observation of work performed by other organizations; observation of work performed by your organization’s employees over time based on observations recorded during each employee’s performance appraisal process; observations made during regular meetings held every quarter where managers discuss how well their team did at completing certain tasks/projects assigned by senior management earlier that year
periodic reporting
You should be reporting on your progress at least monthly and at least quarterly. The frequency of the reports will depend on how quickly you can implement change, but it’s important that you’re making them regularly and providing feedback to your team. The longer it takes for you to see results, the more important this becomes: if a project takes months or years before it delivers tangible results, then there is no reason not to produce regular updates about how things are going!
Similarly, annual evaluations should be used as an opportunity for reflection upon what went well in previous years and what could be improved in future ones—and they should also include these elements:
-
Identification of areas where improvement needs to take place (e.g., leadership skills)
-
Developmental goals related specifically toward improving performance over time (e.g., developing strong interpersonal skills)
metrics
Metrics are the tools used to measure progress and performance. They can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of an improvement initiative, as well as determine how much impact it has had on your organization. In this section, we will cover some common metrics that you may want to use as part of your improvement process:
-
The number of defects found per unit time during testing (or other quality assurance activities)
-
Defect density – number of defects divided by product units produced per year
-
Mean time between failure (MTBF) – average time between breakdowns for a system or product
results
The results of a process can be positive or negative. They can also be quantitative or qualitative, short-term or long-term.
The end result of a process is the final product, which may be either tangible (such as an agreement) or intangible (such as trust). If you’re using agile development practices in your organization and want to implement continuous improvement activities like sprints and retrospectives, then your end product should reflect this change in mindset. It’s important that you keep track of how well you’re doing with each technique—this will help guide future decisions when it comes time for next steps down the road!
impact
The impact of an improvement initiative is the result of its ability to achieve a desired outcome. It’s important to evaluate the effectiveness of an improvement initiative because it can help you determine whether your organization has made progress in achieving its goals.
Impact may be measured by comparing pre- and post-implementation results, as well as analyzing how effective your strategy is at improving performance through increased quality or customer satisfaction.
outcomes
-
Outcomes:
-
Impact on the organization: The business is now more efficient and productive, with improved customer satisfaction and revenue growth. The customer base has expanded, which means greater market share for your company.
-
Impact on the community: You can now serve more people with less pollution (e.g., by using renewable energy sources). In addition, there’s been an improvement in air quality thanks to reduced emissions from vehicles that use alternative fuels or nonpolluting fuels like biofuels or electric cars. You’ve also helped protect wildlife habitats by reducing harmful chemicals used in manufacturing processes at your facility
project management
Project management is a discipline that involves planning, execution and monitoring and controlling of projects.
Project managers have to determine the resources needed for their project by identifying potential problems and risks before they occur. They then decide on how to best manage these resources in order to achieve their objectives within budget constraints, timeframes and quality standards. The key element here is making sure that all stakeholders are involved so that everyone understands what needs to be done from start-to-finish!
Takeaway:
The takeaway point is a sentence or two that sums up what you’ve learned from reading this article. It should be something clear and concise, but it does not have to be wordy or long (unless you want it to).
You can use this section for any one of these purposes:
-
To explain the main purpose of your article, which will help readers understand the context in which they’re reading. This can be helpful if they aren’t quite sure where they are in relation to specific points made throughout the piece.
-
To give them an overview of what’s been covered so far in terms of topics discussed within each section, including any major takeaways from each section as well as key concepts introduced therein (e.g., “Key Concept 1 – Key Concept 2”).
Conclusion
It is important to remember that you can’t just evaluate your improvement initiative and expect the results to be there. You need to take action on what you learn. By taking steps in a systematic way, you will see improvements as well as how they were achieved. The best thing about an I-I evaluation is that it’s a way for everyone involved — from managers all the way down — to learn more about themselves and their organizations by understanding what works best when it comes time for implementing change.
