Introduction

The nursing profession is a growing and evolving field. As the role of nurses in healthcare has changed, so have their responsibilities and skill sets. Advances in technology have also led to more complex patient needs and higher expectations from those who provide care on behalf of other people’s health. To address these changes, researchers are investigating the outcomes (both positive and negative) experienced by patients who receive care from nurses with different education levels: Bachelor’s versus Master’s degree (BSN) or Associate’s degree (ADN).

Outcomes research in nursing

Outcomes research is a systematic process of collecting and analyzing data to answer specific questions. It can be used to improve healthcare, evaluate the effectiveness of treatments or interventions, and assess the safety and effectiveness of treatments or interventions.

The aim of outcomes research is to determine how well a treatment or intervention works by comparing it with another treatment or intervention that has been shown not to work as well (or even worse) in similar situations. ADEs are defined as “any event related to drug administration that adversely affects one or more patients’ health status.”

In 2016, there were an estimated 110 million outpatient prescriptions dispensed in the United States alone; this number is estimated to increase by 60% over the next decade if current trends continue.

The effects of advanced practice role and mode of MSN preparation on clinical practice patterns, quality of care, and patient outcomes.

ADN-prepared nurses are more likely to practice in a variety of clinical settings and provide direct patient care. They have also been found to be more likely than BSN-prepared nurses to work in a variety of roles, including the following:

• Clinically supervised nursing assistant (CSNA)

• Patient care assistant

• Staff nurse or charge nurse

A BSN-prepared nurse is able to offer a higher level of care to patients than an ADN-prepared nurse.

This is because the BSN program provides students with more knowledge about clinical management, patient care and disease prevention. The ADN program does not teach these topics as part of their curriculum, so nurses who complete this program will be limited in their ability to provide quality patient care when they graduate from nursing school.

The transition from ADN to BSN has been the biggest change for many nurses who have been trained primarily on the ADN route. With this research comes more advanced clinical methods that can be applied by ADN nurses such as patient-centered care plans, communication skills training, teamwork training among others.
