A library search is a great way to find information, but it can be tricky when you’re looking for something specific. In this post, I’ll show you how to conduct a Boolean search using the basic terms “AND” and “OR.”

Boolean

Boolean operators are used to combine search terms. The most common boolean operators are AND, OR and NOT.

AND means that the operator must be present for all terms in the list of words and phrases you are searching for. For example, if you want to find books about both cats and dogs then use “cat” as one term and “dog” as another term in your search box or advanced search box respectively like so:

AND

In Boolean logic, the AND operator is used to connect two search terms. When you search for documents that contain both search terms, it is called an “AND” query. For example:

AND keyword1 keyword2

OR keywords1 keywords2

OR

OR is used to search for multiple terms. OR can be used to find all the items in a library catalog, or any combination of words that are contained within that catalog. For example, you could use the following searches:

• OR Books AND History*

OR Books AND World War II*

This will return results with any book title that contains either “Books” or “World War II”, but only if they have both words somewhere in their name (e.g., if you search for books about World War II by using just one letter from each word). You can also use AND instead of OR when looking for multiple terms; however, this means including them all together instead of separating them out with commas:

NOT

The NOT operator is used to exclude results from a search. The syntax for using NOT is:

NOT keyword1 keyword2…

If you want to find books that do not include the title, “The Star Wars Trilogy”, then you would use this command in your search query:

NOT starwars

Wildcard Search

Wildcard searches are used to find words that are similar to the search term, or have a certain number of characters. Common wildcard searches are *, ?, and ?.

• Searches for a single character (e.g., “co*”). Note that this can be done with more than one character by using two or more asterisks (*). For example: co*co*co.*

? Searches for any single character (e.g., “n”?). Note that this can also be done with multiple characters by using three or more question marks (?, ??, etc.). For example: n?n?n?.?

Takeaway:

Takeaways are a summary of an article, usually in the form of a quote or fact. They should be short and to the point. The takeaway should be written in the same tone as the rest of your article; if it’s not clear what kind of information you’re trying to impart, then your audience will be confused by how they should interpret it.
