The basis for our lesson this week came from the Standards of Practice for Culturally Competent Nursing Care Executive Summary, Transcultural Nursing Society: http://www.tcns.org/TCNStandardsofPractice.html.

Your nursing leader has decided that the department needs to better incorporate these Standards of Practice for Culturally Competent Nursing Care into the nursing care delivery model at your organization. There are 12 Standards.

We all have different takes on a standard so the standard should be specific for the patient population or organization. The typical number of students in a class means that we should only read about a particular standard twice. And, keep in mind that each of us does not work in an acute care setting, so examples from other practice settings will add to our discussion.

Standards of Practice in Nursing Care

Introduction

The standard of practice in nursing care is a set of principles that defines what nurses should do when providing care to their patients. The standards are:

Standard 1: Provision of Care, Treatment and Services

You are responsible for providing safe, effective and best interests of the client care.

• The nurse is responsible for the care of a client or patient in accordance with established standards of practice and Client Consent Form (COF).

• The nurse must provide care that is safe, effective and appropriate to the condition being treated.

• The nurse must ensure all procedures are done safely and effectively using established guidelines when possible, as well as when required by law or local board policy

Standard 2: The Nursing Process

The nursing process is a systematic approach to the delivery of care. The nursing process helps nurses to organize their knowledge, skills and abilities to provide quality nursing care. The nurse’s understanding of the patient in relation to their own needs as well as those of others enables them to develop a plan for meeting these needs. This plan may range from simple observation through assessment and diagnosis until it culminates in providing interventions that lead towards recovery or elimination of disease processes (Cook 1985).

The outcomes expected from any intervention depend on how complex an issue it is; whether there are multiple factors involved or just one factor; whether there are short-term goals which need achieving quickly or longer term ones which require more time; what resources will be required such as equipment/materials etc., etc….

Standard 3: The Practitioner-Client Relationship

• The practitioner-client relationship is based on trust, respect and dignity.

• Clients have the right to be treated with respect and dignity.

• They must be informed of their health care needs and how these will be met.

• They should be involved in decision making about treatment options that affect them, including those relating to pain management or psychological support for a loved one with a terminal illness (euthanasia).

Standard 4: Professional Conduct

You have a moral obligation to provide the best care possible.

Nurses should be honest and trustworthy.

Nurses should respect their patients and their families, as well as other health care professionals (physicians, pharmacists).

Standard 5: Professional Development

Professional development is a vital part of the nursing practice. It is crucial to continue learning, reading and studying. A nurse should also attend conferences and seminars so that they can stay up-to-date with all new advances in the field of nursing care.

Nurses also need to network with other professionals to help them grow as professionals within their profession.

Standard 6: Changing Health Care Environment

• The role of the nurse in the changing health care environment:

• The need to be flexible, adaptable and able to work in teams.

• The ability to work with new technologies as they become available.

• Understanding different cultures and how this affects nursing care delivery.

Nurses have a moral responsibility to provide the best care possible to their patients.

The nurse has a moral responsibility to provide the best care possible to their patients. This is based on the concept of caring, which means that nurses are dedicated and committed to caring for others.

Nurses base their practice on empathy, compassion, kindness and respect for people’s rights as human beings with dignity—not just because it makes good business sense or helps them earn more money (which is something we’ve all seen happen).
