This approach helps nurses understand their impact on patients who are part of other cultures and can also help them adjust their own behaviors as they work with people from different cultures. So let’s start by defining what transnational or transcultural means in this context:

• Care must be provided in the context of each individual’s culture, values and language.

• Knowledge about different cultures should be obtained from within the community where it originates or from people who have lived there for an extended period of time (e.g., refugees).

• People with disabilities who have lived in one country for many years may need to learn new skills if they return to another country where their disability does not exist or is less obvious than it was at home (e.g., learning how to use a wheelchair).
