Introduction
The stages of change are a way to think about how people make changes in their lives. You can use this as a model for your own journey toward healthier habits and fitness goals. The stages are: pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance and relapse.
Pre-contemplation
The first stage of the exercise stage of change is pre-contemplation. In this stage, you may not be thinking about exercising or changing at all, or you may be thinking about it but without much enthusiasm. You may also have some doubts about whether or not you should start exercising and if so, what type of exercise would be best for your lifestyle?
This is a common feeling among people who are just starting their journey toward becoming more active: they’re not sure how to get started or what types of activities would work best for them. If this sounds familiar to you personally (or if someone close to you has recently fallen into the same situation), then I encourage reading on further!
Contemplation
Contemplation is a stage of change that can be quite difficult to get through. It’s a place where you have a problem with your health, but you haven’t been able to make a change yet. You may also be in this phase if there are other problems that need to be resolved before moving on (such as financial issues).
This stage can last for quite some time and it’s important not to rush into making changes just because the time has come–you need time and patience!
Preparation
If you’re reading this article, it’s likely that you are considering making a change. You may even be thinking about making a change, but not yet ready to take any action. This is the stage of change where we should be doing our best to prepare ourselves so that when we finally do make the leap into our new habit or lifestyle, everything will feel more comfortable and natural (which can also mean less overwhelming).
The following tips are designed to help get us started in this direction:
Action
Action is the final stage of change. You are actively working on your goal and making progress. You have been successful in the past, so you know that it can be done.
Maintenance
Once you have changed your behavior, you are no longer in the action stage. You are now in the maintenance stage and will be able to maintain your new behavior until it becomes second nature and no longer requires any conscious effort on your part.
This can be a difficult time period for some people because they may find themselves experiencing symptoms of relapse at this point if they were not able to quit smoking or drinking alcohol before moving into this stage (see section on relapse). For those who do not have previous experience with quitting substances such as nicotine or alcohol, it may take more effort than usual to stay abstinent during this time period. There are several things that can help keep you motivated through this stage:

A support network of friends or family members who understand what it feels like when someone tries something new before deciding whether or not its worth sticking with them long term
Relapse
The relapse stage is the last stage before the person returns to their pre-contemplation state. In this stage, they may experience a lapse in their commitment to change and begin overreacting or regretting what they have done already. This is a normal part of the process, but it can be avoided with support from friends and family members who have gone through similar experiences.
