Leadership and management are often confused, but they have a lot in common. They overlap with each other, so it’s important to understand the differences so that you can select the right one for your organization.
Leaders inspire; managers plan and organize.
Leaders inspire, motivate and encourage others to take action. They create a vision for their team or organization that motivates people to want to be part of it. Leaders are visionaries who can see beyond the present and envision what could be.
Managers plan and organize activities that need to be done in order to meet organizational goals or objectives, but they don’t usually create new ideas or solutions themselves.
Leaders have the ability to bring out the best in people by inspiring them with their own leadership style, values system and guidance on how they should go about doing things differently than before (i.e., transformational leadership). Managers often rely on rational thinking processes when making decisions based on established policies or procedures; as a result they may not always think creatively when solving problems at work because this requires some degree of emotional intelligence—the ability for one person’s behavior influences another individual’s thoughts & feelings through perception alone (i..e., transactional relationship)
