The Gap between Nursing Education and Clinical Skills, Are New Graduate Nurses Ready for the Workplace? Nursing Essay You have written Chapter 1 and 2 of Thesis proposal. The topic is The Gap between Nursing Education and Clinical Skills, Are New Graduate Nurses Ready for the Workplace? I submitted the theoretical framework below and was asked to now, write your topic and your theory together here. How does your theory guide your research? Name at least 3 ways. You might be asked this question at thesis defense. Remember if this is the correct theory for your planned research you will see this theory mentioned within your articles. I will also attach Chapter 1 and literature review for you to look at. Subject: Theoretical Framework The theoretical framework that is consistent with my research topic is Patricia Benners theory from Novice to Expert. ?Benners practice development theory demonstrates how a nurse moves from a beginning, rule-based practice through to expert care. Her notion of expert practice as intuitive has not been well-accepted or understood in nursing. A new description of expert practice includes three types of intuitive practice (cognitive, transitional and embodied), the development of which are dependent on knowledge, experience and reflective time? (Lyneham, Parkinson & Denholm, 2009. P 2477). This theory applies to the learning process of nurses and would apply to the gap that exists between nursing education and nursing practice. Without proper education and training, the new nurse cannot progress through the stages of novice to expert. Every new nurse begins as a novice nurse, however, with the proper education and training they are given the confidence to progress through the stages appropriately. The Gap between Nursing Education and Clinical Skills
Introduction
Nursing is a growing field, and it’s only going to get bigger. As healthcare becomes more complex, the need for nurses has never been greater. But there’s one problem: nursing schools aren’t preparing students to be able to work in the real world. It’s time for change!

The importance of clinical skills in the workplace.
Nursing school does not prepare you for the real world. Nursing school is changing to better meet modern expectations, but there’s still a lot of work to do before we get there!
How American nursing schools are being forced to change.
The gap between nursing education and clinical skills is growing. As a result, American nursing schools are being forced to change the way they educate their students for the workplace.
In order to address this gap, nursing schools need to provide more support for their students as they transition from education into practice. For example:
-
Allow students who want extra help with coursework at home or online;
-
Create more opportunities for shadowing experiences (i.e., having one student act as another’s mentor); and
-
Work with employers in order to ensure that employees have access not just during work hours but also after hours when they need help accessing resources—such as websites or books—that aren’t available during regular business hours
How nursing schools can better prepare students for the workplace.
The first step to better preparing students for clinical practice is to teach them how to be flexible and independent. In order for nurses to be able to provide quality patient care, they must be able to adapt their approach based on the patient’s needs and preferences. Additionally, it is important that nursing students learn how to work in teams so they can better handle stressful situations like hospitalization or illness.
It’s also important for students of all levels (undergraduate, graduate) understand that conflict among coworkers happens often in healthcare fields such as nursing; however, this does not mean there is an inherent problem with interpersonal relationships at work or home environments where nurses are dealing with patients’ personal lives outside of their professional environment!
Nurses should feel confident about asking for help at work.
It’s important for nurses to feel confident about asking for help. Nurses can learn from other nurses and be more receptive to learning from people who are more experienced than they are.
Teamwork is a skill that should be taught in nursing school.
Our students should learn to work as a team, because it is a skill that will help them in the clinical setting. In addition, teamwork is important for nurses and patients alike. It’s hard enough for someone who has been injured or sick to get through their recovery process without having someone who they can depend on by their side.
Teaching teamwork in nursing school will prepare students for this type of relationship with patients as well as other healthcare professionals such as physicians and pharmacists during patient care situations where multiple parties are involved (such as surgery).
Experienced nurses can learn from new nurses.
Experienced nurses can learn from new nurses.
New nurses often need help learning the ropes, and experienced nurses are happy to provide it. They know what it’s like to be a newbie at work, so they’re likely going through some of the same struggles your team is experiencing right now. Experienced nurses will also be happy to give you advice on how best to handle situations that may arise during your first few months on the job—and if you have any questions about policies or procedures, they’re always willing to offer their expertise as well!
Experienced nurses will also be able to help guide your team when things get tricky: if there’s another nurse who needs extra guidance or support (or if she needs some extra time off), this can relieve some pressure off everyone else in charge so that everyone can focus on what matters most: patients’ needs!
Nursing school isn’t real life, but real life can teach you things nursing school never could.
Nursing school is a good place to learn the basics of nursing. But it’s not real life, and you can’t expect your instructors or classmates (or yourself) to be ready for everything that you will encounter in the workplace.
You will have to learn how to deal with difficult patients and colleagues, who may be irate about their care needs or complaints about their treatment by staff members. You may also be responsible for helping others understand your process as well as managing yourself—and sometimes this means making tough decisions based on limited information available at any given moment.
Conclusion
Even nursing schools are beginning to acknowledge that there’s a gap between their content and real-life clinical skills. As new technology is developed and more nurses enter the workforce, this problem will only get worse. This means that nurses will need to be willing to make changes in order to keep up with the demands of their jobs.
