NSG 6440 Week 2 This week you learned about common conditions in the adolescent client. Please review the following case study and answer the following questions. A fifteen-year-old female presents to your clinic complaining of shortness of breath and a nonproductive nocturnal cough. She states she used to feel this way only with extreme exercise, but lately, she has felt this way continuously. She denies any other upper respiratory symptoms, chest pain, gastrointestinal symptoms, or urinary tract symptoms. Her past medical history is significant only for seasonal allergies, for which she takes a nasal steroid spray but is otherwise on no other medications. She has had no surgeries. Her mother has allergies and eczema, and her father has high blood pressure. She is the only child. She denies smoking and illegal drug use. On examination, she is in no acute distress and her vital signs are: T 98.6, BP 120/80, pulse 80, and respirations 20. Her head, eyes, ears, nose, and throat examinations are essentially normal. Inspection of her anterior and posterior chest shows no abnormalities. On auscultation of her chest, there is decreased air movement and high-pitched whistling on expiration in all lobes. Percussion reveals resonant lungs. What is the chief complaint? Based on the subjective and objective information provided what are your 3 top differential diagnosis listing the presumptive final diagnosis first? What treatment plan would you consider utilizing current evidence based practice guidelines?

Adolescent Common Illnesses
Introduction
The common cold can be a painful and unpleasant illness, but it’s not the only thing your child needs to worry about. Here are some other illnesses that affect adolescents:
The common cold
The common cold is a virus that causes symptoms like a sore throat, nasal congestion and cough. It’s not as serious as other illnesses because it’s only spread through physical contact with someone who has it.
The best way to keep from getting sick is by using good hygiene practices such as washing your hands often and wiping down surfaces with alcohol wipes before you touch them again. You can also drink plenty of fluids each day so that you don’t feel dehydrated (which makes coughing worse). If you’re sick for more than two days, go see a doctor; otherwise, try resting at home until symptoms stop completely or improve significantly
Conjunctivitis (pinkeye)
Conjunctivitis is a common eye infection in children. It’s caused by a virus, and symptoms include red eyes, itchy eyes, swollen eyelids and light sensitivity. Treatment involves rest and ice packs to reduce pain and swelling. You can also use artificial tears to relieve the pain while you wait for your condition to improve on its own.
To prevent conjunctivitis from recurring: Wash hands often with soap or hand sanitizer; avoid touching your eyes with dirty hands; don’t share makeup brushes or other personal items that may contain germs (such as toothbrushes); dry thoroughly after washing hands
Strep throat
Strep throat is a bacterial infection of the throat caused by Streptococcus bacteria. It’s also called strep pharyngitis, acute pharyngitis or strep throat. Symptoms include soreness in your throat, fever, headache and swollen lymph nodes on one side of your neck.
Strep throat can be contagious for up to 2 weeks after you recover from it because antibodies don’t develop immediately after getting sick with strep. This means that people who have received antibiotics from someone who had strep can still spread it to others even if they’ve been treated for another illness like flu or pneumonia—and those who haven’t been vaccinated against flu should always get vaccinated if they’re at high risk of getting sick with the flu (like students living in dormitories).
Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD)
Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is a viral illness that causes fever and blisters in the mouth, on the tongue, and on the hands and feet. HFMD is caused by a virus called enterovirus 71 (EV71).
The symptoms of HFMD can vary from person to person but typically include:
-
Fever
-
Sore throat
-
Coughing up yellow or white mucus
In addition to these common symptoms there may also be some other symptoms including a headache or body ache; sore muscles; rash; vomiting; diarrhoea or constipation
Ringworm infection
-
Ringworm infection is a fungal infection of the skin that’s usually caused by a fungus called dermatophytes.
-
The disease is spread through direct contact with an infected person or animal, by sharing personal items such as towels and clothes, or through contaminated surfaces.
-
Symptoms include small red patches on your body that itch and may crust over in water-lubricated areas like your scalp or groin area (where you have more hair).
Influenza (flu)
What is the flu?
The flu is a respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It’s highly contagious, so if you have it, you’re more likely to spread it to others. The symptoms of the flu can last for several days and include: fever, headache, body aches, sore throat and cough that doesn’t go away on its own (that’s why doctors call it “coughing your brains out”). Some people also have runny nose or sneezing.
How long does the flu last?
Influenza lasts about 1-2 weeks—it begins with an upper respiratory infection (URI) followed by symptoms of bacterial pneumonia or bronchitis later on in its course of development. In addition to being contagious during this period of time, people who are sick with influenza may not be able to work because they can’t breathe well enough (bronchitis). The symptoms usually start after two days but can take as much as 7-10 days before disappearing completely!
Roseola (human herpesvirus 6 or HHV-6)
Roseola is a common childhood illness caused by human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6). It can be spread from person to person, often through sneezing or kissing.
Children at highest risk for getting roseola include those who live in close quarters with others and those who have other medical problems that make them more likely to get sick. The virus lives in the nose and throat of an infected person until they develop symptoms; this means that someone could be contagious before they even know they have it!
Symptoms include fever , sore throat , runny nose , cough and red eyes . These symptoms usually appear within one week after exposure but may take longer to appear depending on how long after exposure you were exposed. If your child has these symptoms please call your healthcare provider immediately so they can determine if there is anything else going on with him/her besides roseola infection as well!
Know how to prevent and deal with these common ailments.
-
Wash your hands often.
-
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth when you’re sick.
-
Get plenty of rest (and sleep).
-
Drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated.
-
Avoid sharing food or drinks with others if you feel sick (or if you think someone else might be infected with a common illness).
If you have any symptoms at all—like diarrhea or vomiting—it’s best to stay home until they pass; otherwise, the virus could spread from person to person in crowded places like schools or hospitals
Conclusion
We hope that this article has helped you understand the prevalence of common illnesses during adolescence. The best way to prevent these ailments is to be aware of them, talk to your doctor about what treatments are available and how they work, and stay on top of your immune system by eating healthy foods and exercising regularly.
