The discussion assignment provides a forum for discussing relevant topics for this week based on the course competencies covered. Start reviewing and responding to the postings of your classmates as early in the week as possible. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ initial postings. Participate in the discussion by asking a question, providing a statement of clarification, providing a point of view with a rationale, challenging an aspect of the discussion, or indicating a relationship between two or more lines of reasoning in the discussion. Cite sources in your responses to other classmates. Complete your participation for this assignment by the end of the week. As a family nurse practitioner you are working in a rural health clinic. You are evaluating a 16-year-old adolescent patient who comes in complaining of having a difficulty concentrating in school. On exam you also note that the patient is very thin and frail in appearance and is asking you for diet pills. What are some initial areas for concern? What screening tools can help lead you closer to your diagnosis? Describe 1 health promotion strategy you can discuss with the patient. Be sure to address the following in your plan of care: pharmacological and non-pharmacological (OTC) interventions, labs, follow-up, teaching, and referral/s. Health promotion is the process of encouraging individuals to take positive steps that will lead to better health outcomes. It includes providing information and education, influencing behaviors related to health, and creating environments where people are supported in making healthy choices. Health promotion can be implemented as a standalone strategy or in combination with other programs.

Common barriers to implementing health promotion strategies
Barriers to implementing health promotion strategies include a lack of time, resources and communication. For example, if you are an individual parent or carer and have limited hours at work or with family commitments, it can be difficult to find the time necessary to implement strategies such as smoking cessation programs.
In addition to this, there are also barriers that affect organizations such as businesses and community groups who want their employees working towards healthier lifestyles with regards smoking cessation programs being offered in the workplace.
Barriers can also affect individuals who are interested in improving their own health but do not have access/ability to make changes due to financial reasons (elderly) or other reasons such as disability.
Health Promotion is advocating for policies, creating interventions, and educating the community about changes that encourage healthy behaviors.
Health Promotion is about creating a healthy community. It’s about changing the environment to make it easier to be healthy. And finally, it’s about advocating for policies that promote health and create interventions that encourage healthy behaviors.
Health promotion can take many forms: education campaigns aimed at discouraging unhealthy behaviors like smoking or drinking alcohol; programs that provide information on physical activity options; initiatives designed to increase access to healthcare services (such as preventative screenings); or simply encouraging people to eat more fruits & vegetables!
