Instructions
For Assignment 3 you’ll be preparing a well formatted APA-style paper. Its topical outline will include Introduction, various assorted decoupled Topics, Conclusion, Recommendations and References. Each of the proceeding will be bold and centered, of course. Everything will be in your own words. You’ll have in-sentence APA citations (Smith, 2013) that tie to each reference. And a References page. To be a reference, it has to be cited. To be a citation, it has to be a reference. You may and should use in-course, and outside, research materials.
This is not to be written as a Q&A. One tip is to edit the particular topical headers to be short one-to-four-word phrases (HR-related). These are like flash cards that tell a story (to help guide your reader). You can have a suffix of the question #, part #, etc. with in a ( ) to the right of the topic.
If you use (a rare/occasional bullet list) with a topical section be sure to have writing both before and after the list within that section.
Your topics will address the following by way of your writing. When done with your contents, write your Conclusion and your Introduction. Then, after taking a break and proofing (on paper w/ pen?), write your Recommendations section. Of course, your upload will have your name as a part of the file name before you upload.
Evolving Situations in the Workplace
Overview: There are times when HR professionals are faced with multiple workplace situations where the laws and policies are evolving and yet ethical considerations need to be addressed too. Below are two emerging workplace situations where there is no absolute right or wrong answer, but the situation needs to be analyzed from various points of view.
Description of the situations:
S1: Social Media: An employee posted derogatory remarks about the organization and about another worker on a social media platform (e.g. Facebook). The organization’s policies does not address free expression just “offensive” and “harmful” speech. The supervisor is concerned that the posting was dehumanizing, humiliating and could incite a bad vibe as it describes someone’s age in a slang sort of way. The supervisor comes to the HR manager to ask someone else in HR for guidance on how to address the employee. You will be involved with coming up with a policy.
S2: Side Hustle: Inflation abounds and more and more people have side hustles. Some employees make money from a hobby, some do something different for personal enrichment/enjoyment or to keep other skills sharp, some simply work part-time jobs. When you were hired there was no policy against outside ‘employment’. Some managers are pushing for a new policy that requires any and outside work to be approved by management. Some just want to make sure that the work doesn’t compete with the company or cause a degradation in the employee’s performance.
Situation Analysis
These pointers will help structure your thinking around each situation. Use your own more suitable topical headers. You can almost think of them as one paragraph each.

High-level Recommendation
Including how to roll it out
Don’t write on this but do consider the following: What about you, as the HR person?
You have a private non-competitive weekend business. There was no policy when you were hired. You intend to keep your business private. It doesn’t affect your work and it doesn’t compete with your work. The last thing you want to do is ‘reveal’ the business. And it doesn’t feel ‘right’ if the company required permission policy is adopted. Shouldn’t you be grandfathered? One of the reasons you joined the company was it was about getting the work done and stayed out of your personal life.
You also socialize online with some work friends and friends who work at a competitor. Is your free speech about to be stepped on?
Action: Write a well formatted research-based APA-paper that summaries the situations, explores various points-of-view, and comes up with a brief high-level recommendation. Then, as always, have an overall Introduction to your paper, an overall Conclusion to your paper. There will be other situations. So also come up with a one-paragraph Recommendation for how to smartly evolve company policies that are ‘reasonable’ and help attract, retain, and employees rather than overstep, alienate, disengage, and not step on legal or ethical matters.
