Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is a term that means those interventions that are not considered standard process of care. In most cases, people utilize CAM in dealing with the symptoms of diseases such as cancer (Chatterjee, 2021). There are some CAM therapies that have been evaluated through scientific research and they have been found to be safe and effective in a number of occurrences. Such therapies include yoga and meditation that are essential in helping patients to deal with the stress that comes with certain illnesses. However, there are some CAM therapies that do not have any scientific evidence to support their safety and their effectiveness. A considerable number may not work or may be considered harmful to the patient (Chatterjee, 2021). One of the main concerns when it comes to the use of CAM is their ability to have a negative interaction with other prescription drugs. The safety and the effectiveness of CAM therapies largely depend on each therapy. In most instances, the products do not have the necessary approval for them to be sold to the public (Ng et al., 2023). People do not need prescriptions to purchase CAM therapies, which mean that the individuals are at liberty of selecting what might work for them. For example, some of the herbal supplements that individuals use in the market may be harmful when they are used by themselves or when they are used in large doses.
Both holistic and allopathic cares are important to patients. Holistic care brings about the use of CAM therapies and to make the care effective, it is important for patients to combine it with elements of allopathic care. Allopathic care is care that is based on evidence and many years of experience on how effective it is in management of diseases (Chatterjee, 2021). Some CAM therapies can only work on the symptoms and are not curative in nature. This means that a healthcare practitioner has to consider the concerns of safety and effectiveness before advising a patient to make use of CAM therapies (Ng et al., 2023). My opinion is that only those CAM therapies that have been found to work should be considered by both the patient and the practitioner. However, the choice should be left to the patient and the role of the nurse or physician should be to provide the patient with the right information especially on whether there is any evidence to support their safety and effectiveness.

Safety and Effectiveness of Alternative and Complementary Medicine
The most significant need for medications is to help an individual address emotional and physical needs. Alternative and complementary medicine refers to practices not within the standard medical care provided by healthcare providers, such as physicians and nurses with degrees and masters in their respective fields of medicine. Complementary and alternative practices include massage, herbal medicine, green tea, tai chi, acupressure, and acupuncture. Some of these practices have been useful in treating various health conditions (Naja et al., 2019). These practices treat various diseases such as hypertension, cancer, and diabetes.
Alternative medicine may not directly cure cancer but influences the coping mechanisms of patients with the side effects of cancer treatment regimens. The side effects of cancer treatment regimens include nausea, fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea, anxiety, depression, and insomnia. Massage, exercise, and yoga are used to manage fatigue and stress among these patients. Besides, complementary therapies such as aromatherapy, hypnosis, meditation, acupuncture, relaxation techniques, and music help patients reduce stress, anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, and vomiting (Naja et al., 2019). However, patients are cautioned against massage when they have pancytopenia.
Diabetes is among the causes of death worldwide, and millions of people live with diabetes in the US. Various alternative medicines have been used to manage this condition. These therapies include homeopathy, dietary supplements, cinnamon, aromatherapy, multivitamins, garlic preparation, fenugreek, and biofeedback. Few studies have found these alternative medicines' effectiveness in treating these diseases. Some studies have found that aromatherapy increases glucose tolerance. However, this treatment cannot be used as a replacement for the traditional treatment of diabetes with insulin for those patients with type one diabetes. Patients have been warned against using alternative medications that may alter the effectiveness of regular diabetic medications (Rabito & Kaye, 2020). Conversely, exercise has been viewed as the natural treatment of diabetes since it reduces blood sugar and weight.
Hypertension is another condition that can benefit from alternative and complementary therapy such as grains, low fat intake, and vegetables. These therapies lower the blood pressure of the patient. Other therapies, such as meditation and relaxation techniques, reduce blood pressure. There is no harm in using complementary medication in conjunction with holistic medications since holistic care enhances a patient's wellness through mind, body, and soul (Naja et al., 2019). Holistic medicine covers the overall health of the patient by improving it.
Holistic care reduces the reliance on powerful drugs; hence, patients can reduce the intake of over-the-counter medications for illnesses such as headaches. Prescribing complementary and alternative medicine, such as acupuncture and yoga, improves well-being and self-care (Rabito & Kaye, 2020). In addition, holistic care protects the patients from becoming immune to Western medications.
