Analyze Interdisciplinary Therapeutic Relationships and Approaches
Social Work in Interdisciplinary Settings Week 1 Assignment Analyze Interdisciplinary Therapeutic Relationships and Approaches Instructions Reflect on diverse IC teams within the context of your own social work identity. Think broadly about your current knowledge and experience (if you have any) in a specific area of interest to you in social work (e.g., mental health, child welfare, substance abuse, policy, etc.). Then, make a list of all the different individuals, professionals, and organizations that might be considered as “stakeholders”- those who have an interest in, or who are affected by—social work services and practice in your chosen area. Explore how these stakeholders from different and various professions might differ in perspective, but also work together to address the issue. Finally, discuss your personal role as a social worker and how your social work values would contribute to the team of individuals you have analyzed. Include supportive, scholarly resources as appropriate. Length: 2-3 pages, not including title and reference pages Your assignment should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Be sure to adhere to Northcentral University’s Academic Integrity Policy. MSW6008 Social Work in Interdisciplinary Settings Week 2 Assignment Examine EBPs for Implementation in an Interdisciplinary Team Instructions This assignment includes several parts. Please ensure you complete each part for full credit. For this assignment, first, perform a search in the NCU library for three peer-reviewed articles that evaluate an EBP or intervention in your chosen topic area related to social work. Then, prepare an Annotated Bibliography containing your selected journal articles on an EBP you would implement as part of an interdisciplinary team. Begin your written submission by briefly summarizing the topic you have chosen. Then, beneath your summary, include your annotated bibliography (one entry for each of the three articles). Provide a link to each article for your professor as well. For the last part of the assignment, select one of the articles you included in your annotated bibliography and explain how an IC team might apply the EBP discussed in the article to a topic of your choice. Be sure to include a brief discussion of the topic/issue, 1-2 paragraphs about the EBP, and then 3-4 paragraphs about how a team might implement the EBP. Discuss who the team members might be, what members’ roles would be, and how the professional social worker would interact with and contribute to the team. Note: The material in your annotated bibliography must be written after a careful reading of the article itself, and not just the abstract. Furthermore, the annotated bibliography follows the same Academic Integrity regulations as other documents so be sure to carefully paraphrase, or, if you need to, use quotes. The second most frequent academic integrity violations are given for poorly prepared annotated bibliographies. Length: 4-6 pages, not including title and reference pages. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. MSW6008 Social Work in Interdisciplinary Settings Week 3 Assignment Develop a Model of Collective Impact Instructions For this assignment, you will develop a model of Collective Impact in your area of social work. You can continue to build upon the same topic you selected for the Week 1 and Week 2 assignments. Develop a narrated PowerPoint presentation to present your model of Collective Impact to a newly formed interdisciplinary team of care professionals you work with. To get started, think about the following questions: What type of social problem are you trying to solve? What is your purpose? Do you have a Collective Impact mindset? Can you lead adaptively? Each slide(s) should correspond to one of the key components outlined in this weeks’ resources. For example, your first few slides will present the first key component, the common agenda, and so on. Incorporate appropriate animations, transitions, and graphics as well as speaker notes for each slide. The speaker notes may be comprised of brief paragraphs or bulleted lists and should cite material appropriately. Add audio to each slide using the Media section of the Insert tab in the top menu bar for each slide. Support your presentation with at least three scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources may be included. Length: 12-15 slides (with a separate reference slide) Notes Length: 100-150 words for each slide Be sure to include citations for quotations and paraphrases with references in APA format and style where appropriate. Save the file as PPT with the correct course code information. MSW6008 Social Work in Interdisciplinary Settings Week 4 Assignment Explain Interdisciplinary Collaboration Concepts for work with Youth Instructions For this assignment, create a brochure to use as a handout/training material at a Continuing Educational Unit (CEU) Course you are facilitating for Master’s Level Social Workers. In the brochure, list and explain the six overarching elements of IC with youth discussed in this week’s readings. Be sure to use examples relevant to social work with marginalized and oppressed children, youth, and young adults when explaining each concept. Explain to the MSWs why these concepts are important for them to learn and how they can implement them in their social work practice. Be creative by incorporating images, other graphics, charts, or bulleted lists in the brochure. Support your assignment with at least two scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including seminal articles, may be included. Be sure to cite any graphics or images used as well. Length: 2 to 3-page brochure/pamphlet, not including title and reference pages Your brochure should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Be sure to adhere to Northcentral University’s Academic Integrity Policy. MSW6008 Social Work in Interdisciplinary Settings Week 5 Assignment Evaluate the Roles and Responsibilities of IC in a Health Care Setting Instructions This week, you explored IC between social workers and other types of health care professionals. For this assignment, review the following case study: Ms. Anderson is caring for her 4-year-old identical twin sons along with two older daughters in a small apartment in a rural community. The twins need medical infusion services to control hemophilia, a rare bleeding disorder. Ms. Anderson’s nephew recently died from the disorder and she, as well as the other children in the household, have a profound fear response to any bleeding symptoms the twins experience. Also, the family faces a set of other challenges. The children’s father is not present, nor does he contribute financially. The father’s relationship with Ms. Anderson is strained and can be violent at times. Ms. Anderson does not have any other family support in the area. She recently lost her job at a grocery store and would like to start her own business to allow her more flexibility to care for her medically fragile children. Ms. Anderson has had limited training on how to manage her sons’ disorder and how to appropriately administer the life-saving infusion. The family participates in the Medicaid program for health care coverage, which allows for limited nursing services in the home. The nursing visits are complicated, as the children are often not well behaved when providers are in the home to administer infusion or training. The nurses referred the family to a MSW social worker to address the behavioral and pain/fear issues. The RN and MSW were able to arrange joint in-home visits with the family. The MSW worked with the mother on her needle phobia as well as other long-range goals and referrals for the family. The MSW provided mindfulness-based stress reduction, behavioral management for the children, and grief counseling regarding the nephew. The RN provided the infusion/hemophilia education, cognitive restructuring regarding the needle phobia, and pain quantification. After several months of the IC visit approach, Ms. Anderson demonstrated an increased knowledge base of the bleeding disorder, progress on the needle phobia, and stress reduction via the mindfulness-based techniques. The children became more cooperative. Ultimately, the family achieved complete independence from requiring the in-home visits within 60 days. Based on the information in the case study, address the following: Explain the distinct roles of each of the professionals in this scenario. Indicate how these roles are similar and how they differ with examples to support your findings. Determine which specific factors in the scenario necessitated a social work perspective. Analyze the specific social work skills the social worker employed in this situation to increase the effectiveness of the IC. Recommend additional skills, resources, or services the social worker could have offered to this family to improve outcomes. (Think specifically about macro social work skills that could be used to advocate for this client on a broader platform.) Support your assignment with at least three scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including seminal articles, may be included. Length: 5-7 pages, not including title and reference pages Your assignment should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Be sure to adhere to Northcentral University’s Academic Integrity Policy. MSW6008 Social Work in Interdisciplinary Settings Week 6 Assignment Examine Potential Interdisciplinary Collaboration Team Members Instructions Based on the topic you selected in Week 1, prepare a paper that identifies two legal or justice system professionals you learned about this week that you might form an IC with to serve your clients. Be sure to address the following in your response: Explain what values or codes inform their conduct. (Hint: Search the Internet to determine if these professions have a code of conduct similar to the NASW Code of Ethics.) Assess their perspective on the problem and determine how their perspective might be similar to or different from that of a social worker. Explore the situations when you might come into contact with them or work collaboratively with them. Analyze any potential areas of conflict, or opposing perspectives, and where the conflicts stem from. Explain how you would overcome these possibly opposing perspectives? Confirm how you will use your social work knowledge, values, and skills to work effectively with them to deliver effective services for your clients. Provide examples to support your thoughts. Support your assignment with at least three scholarly resources. MSW6008 Social Work in Interdisciplinary Settings Week 7 Assignment Examine Interdisciplinary Collaborations in Micro, Mezzo, & Macro-Practice with a Diverse Population Instructions This week, you learned about how social workers work in IC with housing disadvantaged populations, and read in detail about Cabrini Green. Review these resources again carefully and conduct external research on Cabrini Green and other projects in large urban areas. Based on what you learned in these resources, determine how an IC could work effectively with the residents who were displaced when Cabrini Green was demolished. For example, members of this population discussed the problems with available, affordable replacement housing for more than 14,000 families. How can you apply the foundations of the social work profession at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels to work with diverse clients to problem solve this issue? First, write a 2 to 3-page summary of the history and background of the problems at Cabrini Green. Then, create a chart, similar to the one below, where you explain the components of an IC for each of the social work issues to address this problem (lack of housing for displaced residents). Example Chart: Problem: Lack of affordable, adequate housing for former residents of Cabrini Green Disciplines/ Professions Involved Problem Solving Strategy Micro level Mezzo Level Macro Level Support your assignment with at least three scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including seminal articles, may be included. Length: 2 to 3-page summary and 1 to 2-page chart, not including title and reference pages Your assignment should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Be sure to adhere to Northcentral University’s Academic Integrity Policy. MSW6008 Social Work in Interdisciplinary Settings Week 8 Assignment Signature Assignment: Assemble an Interdisciplinary Therapeutic Team to Deliver Services to an Identified Diverse Popul Instructions For this assignment, select one of the scenarios below. Your task is to assemble an interdisciplinary therapeutic team to deliver services in your chosen scenario. Develop a PowerPoint presentation to present to the therapeutic team you have assembled. Determine who the team members are, why you have selected that profession for inclusion as part of the team, the evidence-based interventions you will use, and the individual roles of each team member as well as how the team will work together (Hint: For Scenario 1, think more ‘micro’ level- Mrs. Jones is your client; for Scenario 2, think more macro level- the school is your client.) Select three primary goals for the team to address with the client system. Be sure you clearly operationalize the role and responsibility of each team member, as well as explain the intervention or strategy each might use to accomplish the goals. Finally, describe how you will evaluate the team’s effectiveness in accomplishing the goals you set forth. Scenario 1: Mrs. Jones is an 84-year-old, African American woman who lives by herself in subsidized housing in a large, inner-city neighborhood. Her husband of 58 years recently passed away. While Mrs. Jones is in fairly good physical health, she does require medication management for diabetes and some assistance with daily living activities. The nurse’s aide who visits her twice per week recently reported she is at increased risk for falls, particularly when bathing herself and other personal care activities. She has Medicare coverage but has a lot of out-of-pocket expenses Medicaid doesn’t cover for her care, and medical debt remaining from the care for her deceased husband. While some of the residents in her apartment complex stop by to check in on her from time to time, Mrs. Jones has no family in the area, is becoming more isolated, and demonstrating symptoms of depression. She barely makes ends meet on her social security check each month, and the nurse’s aide has also reported she may be at risk for food insecurity. She has limited resources, and it is increasingly difficult for her to use the public transportation system to get to a grocery store. Mrs. Jones used to attend church functions twice per week but finds it difficult for her to attend services, and she has stated she “just doesn’t want to be around people anymore.” She has stated she would like to live independently for as long as possible and does not wish to move into assisted living. The manager of the apartment complex has reported she left the stove burner on in her kitchen at least twice during the past month. Fortunately, a neighbor smelled the pan burning and helped her. The manager states these accidents are a danger to the health and safety of all residents, and he may recommend a non-renewal of her lease, which expires in 3 months. Scenario 2: Wagner Elementary School is a public K-5 institution, located in Miller County in the Southeastern U.S. The county is largely rural, with Wagner serving children in the only urban area of Miller County- the county seat. Miller County has high rates of crime, poverty, homelessness, lower socioeconomic status, lower education, and poorer health outcomes of residents as opposed to nearby counties. Wagner Elementary is located in an area of the county where many of these social and economic burdens are highly concentrated. The school is situated in one of the “roughest” neighborhoods, adjacent to a large cluster of sub-standard housing projects. Residents of the housing projects face deplorable living conditions; gang and gun violence and other crimes are common occurrences. Wagner serves approximately 400 students, 25 percent of whom all live in the adjacent housing projects. Many of Wagner’s students face untreated mental health and behavioral issues, learning complications, and physical health challenges such as severe asthma and allergies due to the living conditions in the housing projects. Many students face hunger daily as their families’ experience chronic food insecurity, as well as unsafe environments, including a dangerous walk to and from school. These complications greatly impede students’ ability to learn. Also, violence in the housing project has become so severe it is an additional learning impediment. For example, most of the 125 students who attend Wagner and live in the complex were exposed to a recent gang-related shooting at the complex which resulted in several deaths and multiple injuries. Consequently, many students missed school or were unable to concentrate at school for many weeks after the event. Support your presentation with at least five scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources may be included. Length: 15-20 slides (with a separate reference slide) Notes Length: 150-200 words for each slide Be sure to include citations for quotations and paraphrases with references in APA format and style where appropriate. Save the file as PPT with the correct course code information. Upload your document, and then click the Submit to Dropbox button.
