Select a topic related to your field of study that can be viewed through a SCHOLARLY lens. For Step 1 and 2; see Research Topics & Questions in Canvas.
DESCRIPTION
Research Essay 2 asks you to select a topic related to your field of study and examine it through a scholarly lens. You may have to get creative in how scholars might address your topic.
WHERE CAN I FIND SOURCES?
Use library resources, such as databases, to research and write an argument essay. See How to Access SCF Databases and Conduct Online Research page in Canvas module.
INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1: Select a topic related to your field of study that can be viewed through a SCHOLARLY lens. For Step 1 and 2; see Research Topics & Questions in Canvas.
Step 2: Brainstorm RESEARCH QUESTIONS and select one (or two) to guide your research.
Step 3: Using the library’s DATABASES and/or Google Scholar (also accessed through the SCF Libraries website), find at least FOUR (4) academic-appropriate sources that address your research topic. Refer to Canvas reading for How to Access SCF Databases & Conduct Online Research, how to identify Academic/Scholarly Sources, and Evaluating Sources.
Step 4: Upon completing research, prepare an ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY of the sources; see Canvas page What is an Annotated Bibliography?. An annotated bibliography is simply a summary of the source with the bibliographic citation used as the title (you practiced bibliographic citations with the James Clear article; see Canvas for an example Annotated Bibliography). Each source summary should be 200-300 words in length. The point of preparing an AB is so that you may make use your summaries when it is time to draft.
Step 5: Prepare an OUTLINE of the research essay draft. The outline should include a thesis statement that makes a supportable claim about the scholarly topic; topic sentences for each body paragraph; and a bullet list of supporting points — your ideas and those from published scholarly sources.
Step 6: Using the Simplified Page Format Template, DRAFT an argument essay that synthesizes your ideas and those from credible sources to support your thesis. Remember to incorporate all quoted material into your own sentences (use signal phrases) and attribute all borrowed material (exact words AND paraphrased ideas) to their sources. In-text documentation — parenthetical and narrative/sentence citations — and Works Cited page bibliographic citations should conform to MLA style.
LENGTH AND FORMAT
Minimum of 2,000 words; include Word Count
Simplified Page Format Template
Works Cited; MLA style, hanging indent, alphabetized
NOTE: While bibliographic citations should be listed in Works Cited, AB summaries are NOT part of the essay. These are your notes, and you would never append research notes to an essay.
ASSESSMENT
Work will be graded for focus, organization, and development, including effective use of secondary sources, and language/style (diction, syntax, grammar, punctuation, spelling, mechanics);
Carefully revise and proofread essays (draft and final) before submission. Sloppy work that evidences little or no effort to edit/proofread will receive appropriately low scores.
Be particularly careful to incorporate sources into your own sentences and give credit. Sloppy documentation could result in unintentional plagiarism, so take care and pay attention to details.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Conduct scholarly research, read and evaluate sources, and summarize them in an annotated bibliography (SLO # 1, 3, 8-9).
PURPOSE
In preparation to writing a research essay, students must select a scholarly topic, find academic-appropriate sources, and summarize each source to ensure understanding and avoid unintentional plagiarism.
INSTRUCTIONS
First read Essay 2 Guidelines and attend a Drop-In Teams Conference. Then begin research using the SCF library databases to find academic-appropriate sources. Essay guidelines require a minimum of FOUR (4) sources, but more sources may be used.
NOTE: A Google search is NOT acceptable for this project. Non-scholarly sources (e.g., commercial websites, wikis, blogs) are not academic in nature.
LENGTH & FORMAT
For purposes of our class, your Annotated Bibliography (AB) should conform to the following requirements:
Length: 1/2 to 1 page summary for each source (or about 200-300 words each).
Title of AB: use “Annotated Bibliography,” with a sub-title describing YOUR research topic. In the example (see What is an Annotated Bibliography? content page in Canvas), I was conducting research on Reader Response theory; therefore, I titled my collection of summaries, “Annotated Bibliography: Reader Response Criticism.”
Bibliographic Citation: each source summary should be headed with a complete bibliographic citation in MLA format; this citation serves as a title for the summary and serves two purposes: (1) it will be clear what source is being summarized and (2) the bibliographic citation itself can be cut and pasted to the Works Cited of the research essay. Do NOT cut and paste the notes! You would never append notes to an essay, so don’t include your summaries either.
Alphabetize: save all summaries in a single document and order them alphabetically by author’s last name (in the bibliographic citation). A separate page is NOT needed for each summary.
Page Format: use the example (again, see Canvas content page) as a page format template. Include an ID block, page numbers, and title; double space; Times New Roman 12-point font.
