Requirements: 2000
Midterm Essay #1: To Secure These Rights History 201, Prof. Helton DUE DATE: October 9, 2023 “Society is produced by our wants, and government by our wickedness . . .” -Thomas Paine, Common Sense, 1776 The Founding Fathers who wrote the U.S. Constitution had experienced tyranny first hand. They had witnessed the oppression of the press, and seen the arrest and imprisonment of those who spoke out against the king. They had lived under laws which they had no voice in passing. And, they had fought a war to put an end to these practices. Having won the war, the Founding Fathers sought to create a form of government which would be powerful enough to protect the rights of its citizens, but at the same time would not become so powerful that it could oppress its citizens. This balance – empowering the federal government to do its job, while simultaneously limiting its powers so as to combat the possibility of tyranny – is still central to debates in American politics today.
