Social entrepreneurship in common parlance refers to entrepreneurial activity with an embedded social purpose. Although, entrepreneurial activities with a social concern can be traced back in the history but the social entrepreneurship as an innovative model for social problem solving has recently emerged (Robinson et al., 2009; Mair & Marti, 2006; Peredo & McLean, 2006; Dees et al., 2002; Chell, 2007). Thus, social entrepreneurship mainly stands for endeavors which primarily focus over social value creation and thus social mission remains central to every social entrepreneurship activity.
The social entrepreneurship has become a global phenomenon, impacting societies by catalyzing social transformations for societal wellbeing. The phenomenon mainly addresses the basic needs of human society which were neglected in the race for mainstream development. As such, the phenomenon can occur in any society and often such local social entrepreneurship initiatives have the potential for scale up and replication at the global level. The Impact of Media in Addressing the Currents Trends in Saudi Arabia
Introduction
While the media is integral in enlightening, educating, and entertaining society, there is more to what the media can achieve in any society. The journey to the expansion and exposure of Saudi Arabia has taken a considerable path. Moreover, with oil being the backbone of the economy, the Kingdom has adopted a state-controlled double media strategy. This acts as a safe harbor to protect the people from external criticism and religious sensibilities that international media could arouse. Additionally, the fact that the media in the Kingdom is state-controlled acts as a deterrent and protector of the cultural heritage of this Kingdom.
It is also important to note that the media in the Kingdom has been very influential in giving different audiences diverse information, which helps them invest in these multiverse industries (Zayani, 2012). This process has made the media status in the Kingdom the strongest in the Gulf region. Consequently, the growth and expansion of the Kingdom’s wealth can be attributed to the heavy investment in the media. Most of the developed business entities and industries in the Kingdom have seen their way of advertising their products and services through the media, giving them even more followers and users who have been vital in elevating their businesses and industries. Some industries that have benefited from media include tourism and hospitality, the private sector, medical, education, etc. Therefore, this paper will focus on exploring the media’s impact in addressing the current trends in Saudi Arabia.
Research Questions
1. How has the media affected the general well-being of the Kingdom’s youths?
2. How has the Media affected businesses in the Kingdom?
3. How has the Media affected education in the Kingdom?
4. How has the Media affected tourism in the Kingdom?
RQ1: How has the media affected the general wellbeing of the Kingdom’s youths?
Aljehani (2019) argues that with the introduction of the media, the world has transformed into a global village. This has made it easier for people from different countries to converge in a familiar place to conduct different things, for example, education, business meetings, and other essential things, despite the origin of the people. Furthermore, social media has provided a platform to share and discuss core issues that affect the Saudi Arabian Kingdom. Platforms such as Twitter/X, Myspace, Facebook, Hi5, Orket, Tagged, LinkedIn, and IMO have provided society with platforms that can address the things that affect them. This is incredibly impactful since the youths are the most people who use these platforms. Moreover, it is essential to note that the youths are more affected by matters to do with politics, education, and development. Aljehani (2019) also states that the growth rate of youths using Facebook grew up to 500% in 2011.
RQ2: How has the Media affected businesses in the Kingdom?
Additionally, in the wake of social media in society, businesses have used the media as a channel to advertise their products. This gives them both internal and external customers. This has led to the evolution and birth of online markets such as Haraj.com.sa and Amazon.Sa, AliExpress.com, Jarir, Alshaya, and Eddy, where these businesses can advertise their goods, and customers worldwide can buy and deliver them (Makki & Chang, 2015).
RQ3: How has the Media affected education in the Kingdom?
Moreover, the media has been used as a platform where education can be passed. People have been brought together to acquire knowledge from different places. This has been reflected in Saudi Arabia. The Kingdom has used the media to transfer learning to college students, especially during the COVID-19 Pandemic; most learning activities shifted from physical to online due to the demand for minimal interaction with other people. Moreover, the rise of technology and media has been reflected in the Saudi Arabian Education sector, where the youths are given studies that will help them invent digital programs such as video games, codes, etc. According to Kearney (2022), these skills are essential to the youths since they can avoid unemployment by using these skills to create their own brands and sell their own services and products.
RQ4: How has the Media affected tourism in the Kingdom?
In addition, social media has provided a ground for the tourism sector to grow. It has made it possible for the tourism industry to grow. The central role that social media has played in the region is to change the perception in the minds of the people. Furthermore, this works in three dimensions. These are online advertisements, social networking, and word of mouth. Due to the topic, we will focus on online advertisement. It is important to note that the use of social media to advertise tourism has been very effectful in appealing to the cognitive sense, affective, and people’s behavior towards tourist sites across the Kingdom (Bahurmuz & Al-Kubaisy, 2022).
Furthermore, the use of social media in this sector has been very fruitful in harnessing tourists from all over the world. This is because social media is a global platform whose impact reaches the entire world. Therefore, the use of the media in the tourism industry has greatly revolutionized the entire industry.
Conclusion
Therefore, while attempting to overlook the general well-being of the media, it is wise to look at its general impact on the different industries in Saudi Arabia. The media have positively impacted numerous industries. These include education, tourism, hospitality, medicine, and the private sector. Therefore, gauging these impacts, this paper has achieved the idea that media has made the world a small village where exchanging ideas, knowledge, goods, and services is possible.
