1. Describe the dominant and alternative viewpoints on the community issue you discussed during your stakeholder interviews.
Dominant viewpoints; People’s daily routines and job procedures have changed a lot as a result of the epidemic, showing that a large portion of the community has been impacted. This viewpoint recognizes that the pandemic has caused problems with many people’s ability to lead normal lives. The difficulties with accessing healthcare, such as the rising demand for medical services, are mentioned. This point of view recognizes the value of healthcare access as well as the stress the system has been under since the outbreak.
Alternative viewpoints; This point of view stresses specific challenges that the elderly population within the community faces. It highlights the loneliness, interruption of routines, and increasing health problems that senior people face. The difficulties older people have accessing healthcare are very stressful. This point of view draws attention to problems like delayed surgical procedures and limited access to standard medical appointments.
2. Discuss why it is important to understand dominant and alternative viewpoints when addressing community issues.
When addressing community issues, it is essential to understand both the dominant and alternative points of view. It allows decision-makers to make well-informed decisions that reflect a variety of community viewpoints. It helps in resolving problems and identifying points of agreement among individuals with opinions that differ. It improves the possibility of creating efficient and long-lasting solutions that deal with the problem’s underlying causes.
3. What influence might a person’s implicit biases have on how he or she perceives these dominant and alternative viewpoints? How might these biases skew one’s perceptions?
Implicit biases have a big impact on how people view both the dominant and alternate viewpoints. These unintentional biases can make it difficult for people to look at alternative ideas objectively because they may automatically seek for information or view information in a way that supports their current point of view. Implicit biases can result in stereotyping when people assume certain things about other people based on their place in a particular group. This can make it difficult to evaluate other people’s opinions fairly.
4. Explain how these dominant and alternative viewpoints are both important when seeking to affect positive social change and why might this be important to addressing your community issue.
Positive social change requires both dominant and alternate points of view. Alternative opinions challenge the current norm and propose creative ideas, whereas dominant viewpoints often act as a beginning point for change. Bringing various viewpoints together can result in more in-depth and practical answers. Accepting opposing ideas helps guarantee that underrepresented or underprivileged voices are heard, promoting inclusivity and social justice.
5. How might the knowledge gained from your observation exercise in week 5 helped in your ability to identify and understand varying viewpoints?
The information I learned from Week 5’s observation activity can help me understand and accept different points of view. Observations give you the chance to fully immerse yourself in the local context, which can improve your ability for empathy and the ability to view problems from the standpoint of many stakeholders. You may create a more detailed and well-informed perspective on the community problem and its potential solutions by combining the insights you pick up from stakeholder interviews. And that is what helped me in understanding varying viewpoints.

When starting this assignment, I did my own research to learn about alternative and dominate perspectives. But, to my surprise, I already knew what these mean and how they relate to my topic through my ethics class. Dominant reasoning relates to deontology which I am familiar with. Simply, if the action is ethical, the consequence doesn’t necessarily matter. Whereas, an alternative perspective relates to utilitarianism. Meaning, the actions taken are taken to create the best possible outcome for the majority of stakeholders. Within the realm of mistreatment by the police, alternative reasoning is used more because the situation usually ends as the best for majority of people with slight loss to the stakeholders associated with the person being mistreated. A lot of morals/ethics are not found when looking at instances with the police and black community. So that makes it hard to say overall which is looked at more for my topic. I think it really depends on the specific scenario. I think when officers use dominant view points they may think they’re doing the right thing but usually negatively affects the community. I don’t really think there is a way to get a positive view on why topic since officers don’t seem to want to stop mistreating the black community. Just a couple weeks ago my best friend was pulled out of his car at a traffic stop and cuffed without any knowledge of why the stop occurred. The officers said he matched someone else’s description. So before even checking, they automatically assumed he was the offender and had him over the hood of the car; scared for his life. If anyone could see how to put this in a positive light, I would love to hear your thoughts because my takeaway is that I am lucky my friend is still alive. I believe I have an implicit bias because these instances directly affect my loved ones which in transition affect me.
